Macy McMillan and the Rainbow Goddess - a bookwrap

Unwrapping...

"Macy McMillan And The Rainbow Goddess"
by Shari Green

Age Range:  8-12 years
Grade Level:  3-7

About the book...

Macy McMillan is a lovely little girl, who is deaf.  She faces some tough life-changing challenges in her very near future.  She loves her home but it has a huge For Sale Sign on the front lawn due to the fact that her mom is getting re-married.  They will be moving out to live with a brand new step-dad and his two rambunctious six-year-old twin girls.

 Her sixth grade school year is terminating and she and her best friend Olivia have had a huge blow-up.  Her teacher, Mr. Tanaka, has assigned as their last project one requesting the students track their genealogy.  She is majorly stressed out about that too.  What genealogy? How can she possibly cope with all these changes in her location? her emotions? and especially her relationships? Oh my!!!!

Her mother sees her procrastination in packing and making the wedding centre pieces she agreed to create, so she volunteers Macy to help out eighty-six-old Iris Gillan who lives next door.  Iris also is experiencing a drastic shift in her lifestyle due to an early diagnosis of  dementia.  She will soon be relocating into an assisted living facility.  Really now... how much can one girl take?

Iris is unable to pack up her home herself and unfortunately cannot communicate with Macy due to the fact that she doesn't know sign language.  How is that going to work out?  Well you might be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.

This heartwarming story unfolds a beautiful bond between the elder "rainbow goddess" and the younger "seeker of comfort".  With each encounter: the passing of personal stories, copious notes written to each other, sorting through shelves of books that need tending to and best of all Iris's yummy cookies to share, a very close and special  friendship blossoms between the two.

The book is written beautifully in free verse and the characters are well developed.  Will Macy learn some important life lessons and finally belong to the cohesive, loving family that her heart so longs for?

I highly recommend this book.  The author's previous book, "Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles" is worthy of checking out also.

Storywraps Rating... 5 +++ HUGS!!!!!

Praise for the book...

This deceptively simple novel-in-verse is a beautifully emotional, poetic treasure. Shari Green's writing is captivating and she has created, in Macy McMillan, a complex, true-to-life, sensitive preteen girl....Green's writing is superbly lyrical, touching, and likely to stick with readers for a long time. [H]eartwarming and heartbreaking all at once?.Macy McMillan and the Rainbow Goddess would be a welcome addition to every school library and school curriculum. Besides being a master class in verse writing, it is also a master class in telling stories about how relationships, and looking beyond the exterior, can change the way we look at the world. (Middle Grade Minded)
