To spread their music to new audiences, this daring husband and wife team will soon leave behind the comforts of their spacious 5-bedroom house and embark on an exhilarating journey of full-time RV living. They've settled on purchasing a 2022 Arctic Wolf Fifth Wheel trailer to make it all happen.

Joining them on their epic adventure will be their two adorable kids, Nixon (7) and Nashville (5). Starting from their home in the sunny small town of Temecula, California on April 17th, 2023, the family will traverse the scenic West Coast all the way up to the Canadian border. Stops along the way will include breathtaking locations like Monterey; Big Sur; San Francisco; Portland and Bend, Oregon; and Seattle. Heading southeast toward Yellowstone National Park, they will spend an entire week camping amidst the great outdoors. But the journey won't end there! Daniel, Stefani, and the boys will continue through Idaho Falls, Salt Lake City, Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyon before embarking on the last stretch of their two-month journey. This is the first of many tours for this family band, who are excited to meet fans, make new friends and take their show on the road.

"Why WE Teach Toddlers Animal Sounds" - an inforwrap

Guest Post:  www.readbrightly.com

Moo! Quack! Why We Teach Babies and Toddlers Animal Sounds

by Lindsay Barrett

After test-driving life in several major cities, Lindsay Barrett moved back to her small hometown by the ocean in Maine to work as a literacy consultant and freelance writer. She's constantly surprised that her pre-parenthood experience as a kindergarten teacher doesn't make her chaotic household of five kids under ten feel more manageable and she relies heavily on reading aloud just to get them to sit still. When not chasing little people, she writes literacy curriculum materials, resources, and digital content for educators and parents.

###

If you’ve gotten excited about a toddler’s exuberant “woof!” when they spot a dog from their stroller, you’re not alone. Animal sounds are a common way to connect with little ones, and animal sound production helps with early language development. But is knowing the sheep says, “baa,” crucial for kids’ linguistic success? Why is there so much emphasis on getting babies and toddlers to say, “moo?” Here are three key reasons.

Going from babbling to baa-ing makes sense
According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), babies start babbling when they are 4-6 months old, delighting caregivers with consonant-vowel combinations like “ma” or “um,” and then strings of syllables like “babababa!”

Animal sounds bridge babbling and actual words, as they fit nicely into the developmental progression of early speech sounds. Many animal sounds are easier to say than animal names. In English, “baaa” is less taxing to produce than the /sh/ sound in “sheep,” and “neigh” is less complex to say than “horse.”

As babies grow into toddlers and preschoolers, games, songs, and books with animal sounds help them hear, imitate, and play with sounds in spoken language. This skill set, phonological awareness, is crucial for learning to read and write.

Sounds make for fun conversation
Babies and toddlers acquire language by recognizing, mimicking, and attaching meaning to sounds. Social interaction, and the immersion in spoken language, is the most crucial condition for this developmental magic to happen. (Interestingly, studies have repeatedly shown that there’s something special about real-life interaction to support language learning — babies and toddlers exposed to video language modeling don’t show the same growth as those who get the live version.)

While animal noises aren’t the only sounds that help kids develop language skills — any kiddo obsessed with vehicle noises can back this — animals are a part of life for many children. This includes the toys they play with, books they read, and conversations with caregivers about pets or animals they see. Chatting about animal sounds is an easy way to find common ground with little ones; this goes for parents, caregivers, siblings, relatives, and even the friendly lady in the grocery checkout line. Since more language interaction means more exposure and practice, having this shared lexicon is fantastic.

Animal sounds are language-specific
Words assigned to animal sounds vary across languages because they’ve been filtered through each language’s characteristics and rules. For example, a friend of mine explained that the standard bird sound in Hebrew is “tsif tsif.” This helps kids practice saying the “ts” sound, spelled by the Hebrew letter “tsaddik,” and used to spell “tsipor,” the Hebrew word for bird.

According to linguist Arika Okrent, in Japanese, words can’t start with a /kw/ sound, so ducks don’t say “quack.” Instead, they say “ga ga.” Okrent also points out that animal sounds use a language’s standard features. So, with all the rolling r’s of their human counterparts, French pigs say, “groin-groin.” All of this suggests that animal sounds in a given language are tailored to support speech development in that language.

Animal sounds reflect familiar experiences in culture, too. Derek Abbott of the University of Adelaide in Australia created a fascinating spreadsheet on animal-related utterances in different languages. Scroll through, and you’ll notice only one moose sound — “brΓΆl” in Swedish — probably because Sweden is where a child is most likely to spot a moose strolling around.

Farm animal books for the win!
Even in places that don’t have working farms nearby, farm animals are frequent stars of kids’ toys, songs, and books. Reading farm animal noise books together is an excellent way to support little ones’ language learning. To get mooing, quacking, and baaing with the little ones in your life, check out these farm animal noise books:

The Book

Herman Jiggle wants so badly to fit in with his peers but how far will he go to make that happen?  He feels so inadequate and will try anything to fit in and be liked, accepted and belong.

His hair looks like a porcupine, his shoes are plain and clunky, his teeth are not wiggly yet and he earns for a hole.  Oh my what is he to do?

He wants to try glue to smooth out his hair or even try to take out a tooth the hard way.  Poor Herman Jiggle is having an identity crisis.

Thankfully his loving mom is there to rescue him and convince him to stop trying to change himself and learn to love the unique little human being he was created to be.

Herman Jiggle, Just Be You! Highlights how to overcome insecurities and anxieties and learn the importance of accepting and loving yourself.  The author has included a special page for parents and educators offering insightful and practical tips on helping kids celebration and LOVE all the things that make then unique.

The fabulous illustrations enrich the positive message.  This is the fourth title in the popular Socially Skilled Kids book series.

I love the book ( and the whole series ) and highly recommend it.

The Book

This is a bittersweet story.  I cannot imagine getting a pet then totally abandoning it to fend for itself.  There are many other alternatives that are safe and humane to get rid of an unwanted animal.

A family gets their kids a puppy for Christmas and when they realize its a pit bull, dangerous breed they think,  dad takes it into the city and lets it go.  Holly finds herself on her own trying to manage life so she can survive.  Many of the city folk are unwilling to help her because they too believe she is a dangerous breed.

Holly's journey of survival leads her to a city dog park, an animal shelter and finally to a pittie party. She is fortunate to find acceptance and love at that party.

The wonderful illustrations are very well done and make the text come alive.  I am so thankful the story has a happy ending and Holly not only finds hope in her life but love also.  I love the book and highly, highly recommend it.

The Book

This is an educational book informing kids of colourblindness, CVD.   Little Tim is so happy and excited to start off to school. His backpack is ready and he is pumped to go.

Soon he gets embarrassed by the way he sees colours differently than his peers.  His classmates point out how he makes a race car brown and a lake purple making him feel ashamed and sad.  Finally he yells out..."I am colourblind ok" ?

The story uses colours that someone who is colourblind might see and is quite informative of what that may be.  I was surprised to learn the large percentage of the population that is affected by CVD.  Wow!

The cartoon-like illustrations are wonderful and "The Colourblind Kid" is a perfect way to explain to kids what colour blindness is.  I learned a lot myself.  I love the adorable main character.  The author has included a segment at the end to give more in depth information regarding CVD which is informative and interesting.

This is an important book and I highly recommend it.

Meet the Author

I was born on 26th July 1993 in a place called Torquay, Devon, which is in England. I grew up there and could often be found playing football in the street in front of my house or messing around at the nearby beaches. It still remains my favourite place to be.

My parents thought education was very important.  I had to read aloud every day and wasn't allowed to stop until it was read perfectly.  I became very good at reading aloud quickly, so I could get more time to play!  Later on, I trained to be a Primary School teacher and discovered I enjoyed entertaining children with poetry renditions, reading stories and even a few magic tricks.

I now live in Shanghai, China as an international teacher with my wife Hannah and my daughter Liliana.
