About the book

"Listen to the music of the trees.
Hushhhhhhh goes the wind.
Flitter Flutter go the falling leaves.
The forest changes its song every season."

Thus begins a triumphant book celebrating the life cycle of a tree.  It starts out as a seedling and matures into a giant wonder then passes the baton to a brand new sapling to start the cycle once again.

The tree gives the reader a glimpse of its life as one season turns into the next.  With each new season comes new sounds and activities featuring the actual physical changes that are occurring, how it provides homes and shelter for birds and animals, how it spreads a welcome canopy of shade for a picnic or to read a book under on a hot summer day, just to name a few.  On each page children are happily playing and enjoying its presence.

Sadly the magnificent tree finally expires.  As it lays dormant and lifeless on the ground a true miracle of nature happens.   The tree provides an acorn which starts to sprout and a brand new tree eventually replaces its predecessor.

The illustrations enrich the text greatly by painting portraits of time, adding wonderful details to explore with activities and weather, and even giving the reader a glimpse of animals underground... very clever indeed.

The story lends itself very well to a read-aloud and would be perfect to introduce nature's life cycles in a classroom setting.  I highly recommend this book.

Introducing the author

Tiffany Stone was born in Quebec and named after one of James Bond’s girlfriends. When she was two, she travelled by train to British Columbia, where she has lived ever since.
Tiffany considers herself a word nerd and proudly admits that when she was young, she and her mum used to look up word origins in the dictionary for fun! Nowadays, she especially enjoys
writing poems that rhyme and stories that incorporate plenty of puns.
Meeting a real-live author when she was in Grade 6 inspired Tiffany to pursue her dream of being a writer. And writing her own verse for Dennis Lee’s “Alligator Pie” as a school assignment made her fall in love with poetry. (Her verse was about alligator cake.)
After earning her BFA in Creative Writing at UBC, Tiffany tried out several backup careers, including music academy administrator, bakery prep person (too early!), and veterinary hospital receptionist. She even trained as a hairdresser.
But in 2004, Tiffany’s dream of being an author finally came true. Her published works now include three collections of humorous verse for kids and more than a dozen poems in children’s magazines, as well as poetry on a plaque at a beach and on Vancouver buses. She loves to perform her poems at schools and libraries and sometimes works as a freelance children’s book editor.
Tiffany lives in Whonnock, BC, with her family and many pets. She is constantly inspired by trees.

About the illustrator

Holly Hatam has been making art since she could first grasp a pencil. As a child, she would curate art gallery openings in her tiny bedroom and charge her parents and brother an admission price of twenty-five cents to attend.
Today, Holly is still making art, from greeting cards to textiles and picture books. Her distinctive illustrations combine line drawings, photography, and texture to create images that burst to life with personality and emotion.
Holly’s picture books include What Matters—which received an honorable mention in the Sigrid F. Olson Nature Writing Awards for children’s literature—Bear is Not Scared, The Boy in the Box, and the anticipated series Maxine the Maker, to be published by Dial Books in 2018.
Holly lives and works in Whitby, Ontario where she can be found hugging trees, stuffing her pantry full of tea, and sticking her nose in a book.
