Quote of the Day
"There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them."
~Ray Bradbury
Reading is absurd, isn't it? Page after page of symbols. Having to make sense of them all is mind-stretching. Filing the important things you want to pull out and stuff in your brain and throwing the rest away is time consuming. Strange voices in your head that aren't your own talking to you incessantly seems madness . Why do we persist? Why bother to pick up a book anyhow?
There are many different reasons that people choose to read. They may read for entertainment, just to pass the time, to visit other worlds or to expand their sense of what is possible. We hunt for treasure, seeking new things to which we can aspire, clues and answers to what our lives are meant to be. At best, we read to challenge ourselves and to be changed.
Our new generation of readers are hard to convince that books have value in their lives. They are so "plugged in" that they think reading is redundant. The ebooks on computers, tablets and phones are bridging that gap, thank goodness. There is nothing more special than giving your child the gift of reading. The importance of a paper book as a special treat is a wonderful idea to instil in them. Reading aloud to them daily, and having them see you model reading yourself, is of upmost importance to their reading success.
Be sure you pick up a newspaper or your favourite book and curl up and read today. Be sure to put your child on your lap, tuck him/her under your arm and share a good book with him too. Stories are important and to be able to read them is crucial. Enjoy your reading journey today.
Read on and read always!!
