When Hurricane Elmer hits the Moody neighbourhood a huge, bad blackout occurs. Everything pleasurable and desirable is now powered off and the family: Judy, her little brother Stink, Mom, Dad and rescued Grandma, are left to hunker down and get through this disaster as best they can. They discover that the alternatives to electric lights, booming t.v.s, and busy computers can be quite pleasant indeed. They play games together, make up stories together, and use their imaginations non-stop to carry them through the storm. With the school closed, work unattainable, and no place to go, they go into themselves instead, and are delightfully surprised at what they revtreive when forced to be still, creative and resourceful in such a time of "survival." The illustrations are wonderful and add a lovely visual dimension to the storyline.
Most of us can relate to this story in some form or another as we too have found ourselves in similar circumstances when our weather has caused us great concern. At the end of the book there is a list of things that you and your family can do if you are caught up in a similar situation. The story is filled full of humour and wit that will surely bring a smile or two forth while reading. This book is ideal to be read out loud or curled up reading it by flashlight or lamplight. Both the young and the old will love the read.
