Ages 3-5
Unwrapping some illustrations for you to take a peek at...
My take on the book...
Max is an adorable little creature that is a true sweetie pie although he would hate for me to call him that I am sure. People think he looks so sweet and they adorn him with ribbons and dress him up looking (in their mind's eye) very cute. But Max disagrees with their image of him. Max feels brave, fearless, a conquerer...because Max chases Mice!!! Now he has to figure out what the heck a mouse looks like so he can chase it.
With wit and humour, author and illustrator, Ed Vere portrays his amazing little character in both words and visually. The story is reminiscent of "Are You My Mother" but spun through a kitten's eyes. The illustrations are simple, bold and very expressive. The text is in a straight line which is perfect for beginning readers to follow along and understand.
Max the Brave sets out on an adventure to catch a mouse. He encounters many animals along the way that are more than willing to point in him the right direction of the mouse that always has just scampered away. When he actually bumps into a mouse, the mouse has the audacity to fib a little a out who he really is and sends Max off to pursue a monster instead of himself exhibiting self-preservation at it's finest. Hilarity follows as you journey along with Max the Brave, Superhero, chaser of mice who finally he decides that maybe chasing mice isn't all it's cracked up to be.
As well as being named one of The Sunday Times's '100 Modern Children's Classics', Max was long listed for the Kate Greenaway medal and is published in 12 languages.
