Everville: The Fall of Brackenbone - a bookwrap

Unwrapping...

Everville: The Fall of Brackenbone

Author:  Roy Huff

About the book...

This epic fantasy novel is the fourth book in the Everville series.  It is intended for a Y/A audience but I think it is appropriate for all ages.  Anyone that is into fantasy and sic-fi, tempered with a bit of history, will certainly enjoy it.

Unfortunately I have not read the prequels, but not to worry, because this book is a stand alone book and it didn't take long for me get into it and understand the storyline.  Huff has a gift of painting vivid word pictures which adeptly transported me into the drama taking place.

He creativity portrays two parallel worlds, one located in modern-day suburban America and the other in a magical world where shape-shifting dragons, giants, beasts, and lots of action reside.  Both worlds are in grave peril and it's up to the hero, Owen Sage, to find the Fourth Pillar of Truth which will save both cosmos from total annihilation.

Good versus Evil is always a favourite theme that readers everywhere just can't get enough of.  Owen Sage uses his moral values of honesty, courage and sapience to defeat the impending evil.  It is a wonderful page-turner and Huff brilliantly leaves the book open-ended to the reader's delight, because savvy readers know another book will be coming forth in the near future.  I highly recommend the series.

Interview with Roy Huff

Rapid Fire Questions...

 What is your dream car?

I like a lot of cars. At the moment, I would like a Tesla, but I am also
partial to a Rolls Royce Phantom.

Do you prefer to give a gift or to receive one?

I'm always grateful to receive a gift. While I do enjoy giving them,
receiving
a gift does make me smile a little more, perhaps because I am usually the
one doing
the giving.

Do you prefer a sit down meal or a picnic?

I prefer to sit down. Picnics are nice, but finding a comfortable
position for
my legs usually proves troublesome.

 Are you left-handed or right-handed?

    I am right handed.

What is your favourite drink?  (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)

I don't drink alcohol anymore, so I will go with coffee. I prefer my
coffee
flavored with non fat milk and two cubes of sugar.

Serious stuff:

What was your favourite book as a child?

Charlotte's Web was a great book, but I tend to shy away from
favorites. There
are so many that are great, so it's difficult to pick just one.

What person influenced you most in your lifetime?

My mother likely had the most influence, since she raised me, but I
am very different
from my mother. As far as the most influential person outside my family,
that's impossible to say.
I am extensively read, and would probably say reading material of my
choosing has had the most
impact, since it has informed my own suspicions and thoughts about life.
That's not exactly a person, but
more of a combined influence of all the writers I read, be it an article
or a book.

What motivated you to become an author?

I had to write a creative writing paper for school, and I received
comments from fellow
classmates they wanted to read an entire book about Everville, so I
decided to make one. It
came rather late in life, and I felt I had the ability to do it, so why not?

Were you a good student in school?

I skipped a grade, and graduated Valedictorian and Student Body
President.

What do you like to do to relax?

I love movies, scifi/fantasy television, reading articles, and
talking with
friends.

What famous person, either living or deceased, would you like to meet
in person and have dinner with?

I would enjoy meeting Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison,
Steve Jobs, and more.

What adult authors do you like to read that you can pass onto us?

I like C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, George Orwell, Jules Verne,
and more!

As a child what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a
meteorologist
since I was 4 years old, and I realized that dream for about 3.5 years as
an adult.

What’s more important in your opinion: character or plot?

That's impossible to answer. They're, both important. I start with
plot, and refine
my characters in the editing process.

Do you have any plans for your next book?

I have a few ideas for my next book in the series, as well as the next
few books outside
the series, but I'm keeping that mostly under wraps.

Are there any last thoughts for our readers you would like to share?

I know that many writers, or aspiring authors have desired to be
writers their entire lives.
Many others feel it is an impractical or unattainable goal. To that, I
will say that what makes
one a writer is simply that they write. They're are almost no barriers now
to being a published
author, so don't let anyone stop you from pursuing your goal. I will
simply suggest that one
plans ahead by hiring a more than one editor, get beta readers once it's
finished for a few more
eyes, and don't take criticism too personally. It's never to late to start
writing, but I don't
recommend giving up you day job. You don't have to in order to write. Hope
for the best, but
plan for the worst, then never give up.
