About the book...

There are just some books you pick up, read through and after you  finish just want to hug and never put down.  Well that is the kind of impact this book had on me.  It is one of those books that I wish I had written.  I am so bad that I have homed it in a ziplock so that nothing can harm it and it will always be in pristine condition for when I want to pull it out and re-visit that feeling of "awe" and love that I experienced the very first read.  Yes, I am a hopeless booklover and this is one of the books I truly love.  I bought multiple copies for family and friends just to share the celebrate my  joy of a truly wonderful book. This fantastic little book stole my heart.

If your little one is afraid of going to bed at night and doesn't like when darkness sets in then this book is for you.  It is written in rhyme and the words carry you along and invite you to share a wonderful, non-scary adventure with Daisy as Darkness slips in for his nightly visit.  Daisy has no fear of him and he is portrayed by the author as kid-friendly and tons of fun.  Darkness is dressed in a glossy, black patent-leather motif and he oozes in and fills up the whole room.  There is no mistake that Darkness is "in the house."  He is funky and spunky and together both he and Daisy dance, play, and hang out until bedtime, both enjoying each other's company to the max.  

The brilliant accent colours of lemon yellow and hot pink make this book visually striking.  It would be a fun gift to give and of course an accompanying nightlight would be perfectly awesome.

About the author...

Born in rural Norfolk, I have been drawing and writing since I was a small child. Inspired by artists and storytellers like Edward Lear, Eric Carle and David Mckee, I produced many poems, stories and pictures, which I would turn into books.

​I now come up with most of my ideas for stories when out walking in the countryside, and, if I’m lucky, I have a pencil and paper with me at the time- I quite often find myself repeating certain words or rhymes over and over in my head until I get home!

I have written and illustrated several picture books, including ‘Betty and the Yeti’, and ‘Darkness Slipped In’, which was highly commended at the British book design and production awards in 2008 and nominated for the Kate Greenaway medal in 2009.

I have recently illustrated ‘Monsters Don’t Cry’ for Brett Mckee, and am currently working on my latest picture book ‘Recipe for a Story’ which is due to be published by Macmillan children’s books in 2014.

I live in Deepest Darkest Dorset with my partner Sam, our two small children and Daisy the dog.
