Hence the Arctic nations are building the military infrastructures like ships, ship breakers, airports, and submarines. They also have increased the combat readiness of the troops by having frequent military exercises in the high North.
Another factor that has accelerated the militarization of the Arctic is the opening of the shipping lanes in both sides of the Arctic, the North Sea Route in the Russian Arctic and the North West Passage in the Canadian Arctic. With the climate change causing shrinking ice these shipping lanes become navigable during the summer months which may become major transport lanes in the future. Both Canada and Russia want to control these important sea lanes of commerce.

William Craig Reed is the author of the New York Times bestselling non-fiction book Red November: Inside the Secret U.S. – Soviet Submarine War(HarperCollins, 2010) and The Eagle and the Snake: A SEAL Team Six Interactive Thriller.
