About the book...
One look at that little character on the cover and I knew I was in for a treat. He is downright adorable. I know you will be just as pleased with little Kelp's story as I am.
Kelp was born deep in the ocean but he is very different than the other narwhals around him. He can't quite put his finger on it but he knows he isn't the same. One look at him convinces you that he definitely is a unicorn but a unicorn living amongst narwhals is very, very unusual indeed.
Yep, Kelp has a tusk but it's not as long and grand as the other narwhals that swim beside him. He has a little difficulty with the swimming as you see him wearing floaties to keep up with the pod.
One day the ocean current sweeps him up and brings him to the surface. What he sees there is truly amazing. He sees a majestic creature standing like a statue in the moonlight and this magnificent creature looks just like him! Oh my! Kelp faces his fears and steps out onto dry land. He cautiously journeys through the dark forest in search of this magical, sparkling creature he sited from the ocean.
Kelp happens upon a field of animals that look identical to him and he yelps, "Land Narwhals!" To which a unicorn replies, "Actually, we're unicorns. And, by the looks of it, so are you!" Can this be true? Is Kelp really a land narwhal or is he a sea unicorn? How can he know for sure? Will he have to choose what he is created to be?
Jessie Sima's precious illustrations along with the fact that young readers know the Kelp is indeed a unicorn, not a narwhal, will delight kids of ages 4-7 guaranteed! This is Sima's first picture book. Can't wait for number two!
