About the book
This is a delightful book about how Ana's birthday wish takes a strange turn indeed. Ana has her heart set on receiving tickets to the amusement park and she asks her Abuela if she could please grant that wish. Abuela is the Spanish word for grandmother.
Her wish gets granted by clever Abuela but not at all how Ana expects. Her grandmother sends her a chicken. Well that certainly isn't what she had asked for is it? Now what in the world is she going to do with that strange bird?
Well she knows she has to feed it daily. She discovers how clever and resourceful this special chicken really is. Not an ordinary one indeed. This chicken has plans... BIG PLANS... and knows how to get those plans implemented. She recruited her friends, Ana's dog, Ana's cat, and even her hamster to make that birthday wish come true. How splendid of her!
You know what my take-away is from this very imaginative tale? Next year I'm asking for a chicken.
The illustrations are whimsical and the florescent colours are vibrant and eye-popping. They embellish the narrative so much adding both wit and humour. I recommend this fun book for you to check out and perhaps read you will include a plucky poulet on your birthday wish list too. It's certainly worth a try.

About the author
Laura Gehl is the author of popular picture books including One Big Pair of Underwear and the Peep and Egg series. She lives in Chevy Chase, MD with her husband, four children, and zero birthday chickens (so far).
About the illustrator
Sarah Horne grew up in snowy Derbyshire, UK with some goats and a brother.
She learnt to draw whilst trying to explain her reasoning for an elaborate haircut at the age of nine. Sarah then honed her skills on the mean streets of Falmouth, studying Illustration. Here, there were daily street battles of scribbling resulting in many paper cuts, but some very nice drawing.
Alongside working on some very funny children’s titles, Sarah has also worked on commissions for The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Kew Gardens, Sesame Street and for IKEA as their Children’s Illustrator In Residence.
She now draws, paints, writes and giggles from underneath a pile of paper at her studio in London.
Sarah’s books have sold internationally in Mexico, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Germany, US, Australia and NZ.
