Unveiling the book

Percy penguin and Posy penguin are very good friends but they couldn't be more different in their outlook on life.  You see Percy is a self-proclaimed daredevil.  He loves to whiz down snowy slopes on his tummy and jump off huge icebergs into the water to make a gigantic SPLASH!!!  Anything goes when it comes to taking a risk and he is able to have a blast doing it.

Posy, on the other hand, is not so brave.  She has anxiety and worry about many things like: shuffling down unfamiliar slopes (she slides on her bottom), being afraid that she may belly flop if she jumps off an iceberg,  fear of snowstorms and loud noises, and her biggest fear?  THE DARK!!!!

One day Percy goes missing and Posy is very upset.  Who will go and find him?  Is Posy brave enough to take on his rescue mission of retrieving her friend all by herself?

This delightful story is about overcoming fear and a special bond between two adorable penguins.  The illustrations are extremely well done and very integral to the success of the story.  At the back of the book the author has included short lessons and activities for parents, teachers and caregivers to open up dialogue regarding bravery and letting go of fears and apprehensions.  I love the positive messages the book portrays.

Unwrapping "Next Steps to utilize from Storytime: Not-So-Brave Penguin

Being scared and being brave

* Discuss what an amazing character Posy is for overcoming her fears and being brave when it was needed most. Ask the children to think of things that they are scared of. Write two headings on a piece of paper: “I am scared of…” and “I could be brave by…” Tell the children what you are most scared of and write it under the first heading. Then tell them how you could be brave like Posy, and write it under the second heading. E.g. “I am scared of spiders.” “I could be brave by holding a spider in my hand for one minute.”

* Give the children a piece of paper with the two headings at the top. Ask them to write their responses under each heading. When they have finished, ask them to read out their first sentence in a scared voice and their second sentence in a brave voice.

Percy and Posy pictures

Start by taking a look at the illustration of the penguins and the iceberg on page 12. Give each child a piece of blue paper and some white paint. Begin the activity by asking the children to paint the iceberg from the book and finger paint some snowflakes in the sky. Give each child two black paper ovals for the penguins’ bodies, four googly eyes, and two orange cardstock triangles for the beaks.

Discussion and comprehension

* Discuss the story with the children and ask the following questions, encouraging them to take turns and give full answers if they are able to. Offer support by turning to the appropriate pages of the book if needed.
