In her own words
"Dodo"n't let your dreams go extinct. That is the message that newest children's writer, Vanee Apoolingum, wants to spread to her readers.
"I was born and raised on the paradise island of Mauritius and grew up listening to many stories about the native flightless dodo," explains the author. "As a result, these have provided me with inspiration when shaping my main character, Derek, as well as the various exotic locations in the story."
"Since becoming a mother to my two boys, reading stories as well as making them up together has become a big part of our routine, firing up their imaginations. Imagination is so important to nurture in the next generation. My children have also inspired me a great deal to explore the themes of this book as well, creating a tale that educates as well as entertains."
Unveiling the book
Derek the dodo has one wish... he longs to fly even though he knows that dodos can't take flight. He tries and tries but to no avail. He doesn't give up and keeps his dream alive. One night while sitting under the stars, stargazing with his Grandad Dodo, he is encouraged to wish upon a shooting star. Grandad tells him that sometimes wishes do come true. Can you guess what Derek wishes for?
Magically his wish is granted! Derek, after a lot of preparation and prodding from his family, takes to the skies to seek new adventures and at long last fulfill his dream of being a dodo that can fly.
He encounters a young boy named Aaron on his travels who coincidentally shares the same dream. Aaron dreams of having exciting adventures away from the beach he is rooted to through no fault of his own. He longs to be free and see what is beyond his shore. Derek invites him to board his back and off they soar to investigate the beautiful wonders of their gorgeous island. What fun!
The duo encounter some challenges along the way but skillfully manage to overcome them. They satisfy their curiosity by visiting amazing sights which create great happiness inside both of their hearts.
The book encourages kids to never give up on their dreams, the value of a wonderful friendship and how to have the courage to be different than others around you. The book ignites imaginations and transports kids into a magical story where the impossible can become the possible.

Meet the author
Vanee Apoolingum was born and raised on the paradise island of Mauritius. Growing up in exotic surroundings plus childhood stories about the flightless dodo provided her with the inspiration for Derek the Flying Dodo.
For the past 17 years she has swapped warmer climates for the milder (and wetter) weather of London. In her very limited spare time, thanks to her two young boys, she enjoys reading, writing and baking with her children.
