"Nielsen's tale and Mueller's digitally created pooch and puss pair perfectly. . . . Princess and Darryl need a sequel." --Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews

“Beautifully illustrated with muted colors throughout, both Nielsen and Mueller have presented a delightful story of a pampered cat who learns to adapt to the changes within her family.” --School Library Connection

Unwrapping the story

This is a delightful story that kids will love.  Princess Puffybottom is a refined, elegant feline who has the humans in her home wrapped around her cute furry paws.  She gets meals that are fit for royalty, servants that take care of her "delicate matters" ( her litterbox), and all the love and affection that she so rightly deserves.   Hellooooo!!!!  Then one day her purr-fect Princess world is turned upside down with the arrival of... Darryl, a dog of all things!

She finds him totally uncouth, disgusting and well.... an animal!  He pees everywhere, licks up his own vomit, drinks from the toilet and has no eloquence in him at all.  Yuk!

The arrogant Princess concocts schemes to get rid of him but to no avail.  It seems that he is there to stay.  The humans don't even seem to care about his mannerisms as they are focused on other things.

Princess Puffybottom concedes that Darryl does include her when he tips over the trash and they share the leftovers they find together and he does adore and worship her... that is truly obvious.  Perhaps she needs to cut him some slack and at least try to co-exist with this adorable little guy.  When she makes the decision to finally get over herself she finds that her world goes back to being purr-fect again. Well... for a little while it is.  A wonderful, fun twist is added at the end of the story which just might turn Princess Puffybottom's world on its ear once again.  Mmmmmm... wonder what that might be?

The illustrations are so expressive and full of life.  I really love them.  They make a perfect marriage to the text and add a lot of richness to the story. The storyline is full of humour and just plain fun. The unexpected ending will be a big hit I'm sure. Who doesn't love a clever twist that is guaranteed to make you smile?  I highly recommend it.
