Unwrapping some Editorial Reviews

"Inclusivity is a hallmark of this book... A celebration of baby love as it's carried out all over the world." - Kirkus Reviews

"The book makes a clear and pointed effort to promote all kinds of diversity and depict a variety of cultures in a beautiful and respectful light...the concept is very clever, and the three-dimensional cut-paper collage work is exquisitely textured and boldly colored. Barron's past awards are clearly warranted. -Booklist

"Detailed illustrations of realistically diverse families elevate a simple concept. Ideal for sharing one-on-one with toddlers and preschoolers." - School Library Journal

"An utterly charming and beautifully illustrated book that celebrates diversity in all forms while simultaneously exploring cultures around the world." - Canadian Review of Materials

"A wonderful collection of vignettes from around the world...a global story of life and love." - CanLit for Little Canadians

Unwrapping the Story

This is a charming story that both young and old will find delightful. Babies are celebrated by showing the care and love they receive from caregivers, parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents on a global scale.  Diversity reigns and the author and illustrator have done a magnificent job of showing the different carrying styles of these amazing bundles of joy.  Some are carried in slings, on shoulders, in backpacks, on hips, in baskets, and of course snuggled  tenderly in arms.

Families carry their babies in a variety of ways.  Each and every infant is wrapped in an aura of love that brings them peace, comfort and an unmistakable sense of protection and safety.

The cut-paper collages are stunning and elevate the story to the highest level.  Kids will love the repetitive phrase 'upsy-daisy, baby' that winds its way throughout the narrative.  It is a testament to all that these little ones are truly special and are handled with TLC  and deemed treasures all over the world.  I highly recommend this book.

Meet the Author

After finishing high school, I studied English literature at the University of Toronto. I didn't know what kind of job I wanted -- but I did know that I loved to read and write.
I'm Susan Hughes, an award-winning writer of more than 25 children's books, including picture books, chapter books, young adult novels, non-fiction for all ages, and even a non-fiction graphic novel. My books have received multiple nominations for the Forest of Reading awards, the TD Children's Literature Awards, and the Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children's Literature.
I've been writing children's books and working as a freelance editor for 30 years. (Yup, I'm getting old!)

About the Very Gifted Illustrator

Hi! My name is Ashley, and I'm an illustrator.

I graduated from OCAD in 2007, and have been working with cut-paper collage ever since. I've illustrated several picture books, including the Math in Nature series, Kyle Goes AloneUp! (Owlkids) and Birthdays Around the World (Kids Can Press), with a couple more on the go.

In addition to my freelance work, I enjoy teaching art classes and presenting my books to libraries and schools. This past fall, I was selected as Toronto Library's 2017 Illustrator in Residence: a program organized by IBBY Canada honouring children's book illustrator Joanne Fitzgerald

I live in Toronto with my partner, Kevin, and our three cats.
