Unwrapping the Story

This is a delightful rhyming book that is perfect for a child who is a picky eater and doesn't want to step out and try tasty new foods.   The story begins with a shocking comment coming from an anteater:  "I don't like to eat ants/said Anteater One/ They don't taste very good/ and they tickle my tongue."  What?  Are you kidding?  An anteater who doesn't like ants. Preposterous!  Ahhhh... now the reader is in!

Thus ensues an antsy discussion between Ant One - the ant hater, and Ant Two - the ant lover.  Each plead their case about who is right and who is wrong.  Anteater One realizes that the debate is going nowhere fast so as a last ditch effort to prove his point he steps up his game and invites his skeptical friend to have lunch... an ant-free lunch that is.  He offers to take him to the Peanut Butter and Jelly Deli.  Will Ant Eater Two swallow his pride and accept his friend's gracious offer and if so go ahead and swallow a new type of food that he is unfamiliar with?  I wonder if he is courageous enough to vacate his comfort zone and give some new foods a try?  Mmmmm, think he will?

The colourful and imaginative illustrations created by Sabine Mielke enriches the story and keeps the reader involved right up to the very last page.  "I Don't Like to Eat Ants" is meant to be read again and again, and enjoyed by parents and children alike," says Jeffrey Belle.  "It's charm and silliness attract the early readers, but the moral is one parents know all too well and will appreciate."

I  personally love the sub-plot that is taking place by little ants who have a dialogue of their own.  I just wish that the ants had been given names.  I find that addressing them as Ant One and Ant Two is a bit awkward and I'm sure for some kids will be hard to keep track of who is who.  I highly recommend this book.
