Unwrapping Some Wonderful Illustrations for You

The Book

This book highlights eight mammals lovingly nurturing their babies.  It celebrates the things that unite mammals all over the world.  Things which will foster empathy, kindness, and compassion in young readers.

This is the newest book in the "Beginnings" collection.  Each two-page spread details the specific name of each animal baby: pup (Brazilian free-tailed bat ), kit (red squirrel), joey  (kangaroo), cub (cougar), calf (blue whale), cub (polar bear), calf (Masai giraffe), and calf (Asian elephant).  It documents how these babies are birthed, nursed and weaned so they can survive on their own when they are grown.

The book details the important role that mothers and other members of the community have in raising the young from birth  until it's time that the babies are old and proficient enough to survive independently.

The illustrations are truly beautiful and the educational message is presented in a meaningful way that young readers can comprehend.   No matter where their location or to what mammal mother they belong they all rely on their mother's milk to help them grow into strong adults.  The precious times spent together create strong bonds of love and caring that readers both young and old will recognize from their own lives.

"This Is How I Grow" just received the 2020 Book of the Year award from Creative Child Magazine and has also won a Tillywig Brain Child award. Tillywig awards chair Dan Levy celebrates the first-person narrative that “deeply draws young readers in.” saying that, “verbal gems and lush, lifelike illustrations infuse the writing with warmth and personality. Kids find the wide-ranging skills these animals must quickly develop in order to survive to be all the more compelling for their, and our, shared classification as mammals.”

The back of the book offers a page of current resources and a section stating more interesting facts about each mammal that is featured in the book.  A world map is included that displays the animal's location and the final question... where do YOU grow?   I highly recommend this book.
