The Book
Peyton's family is hosting the Thanksgiving get-together this year and the entrance ticket for those invited is to bring a pie. Peyton is not a picky eater she just has her own rules about what she likes to eat. She dislikes when two foods touch on her plate. She is not fond of green, orange or red foods and she certainly doesn't go for gooey, gummy, sticky, slimy, frosted, flaky, chunky or lumpy foods. But this Thanksgiving dinner she vows to her beloved dog Milo that she will try one new food.
A parade of pies pass through her door with names such as Boston Cream Pie, whoopie pies, ruffled milk pie, plum galette, Mississippi mud pie and more. Her mom makes a delicious apple pie to add to the eclectic pastry collection. Which one will Peyton choose to indulge in? Which one do you think will be chosen?
The illustrations are extremely well done with lots of expression and activity. The invitees are diverse and the spirit of the dinner is happy and spirited. The book is a celebration of food, family, and community. "Peyton Picks the Perfect Pie" encourages kids to step out of their comfort zone and discover something new to delight their tastebuds. The author has included a recipe, "Best-Ever Apple Pie," for the the perfect pie. How fun is that? I highly approve this book.
