The Book
Winter is fast approaching and best friends Poppy and Sam are carefully gathering food for hibernation time. Poppy says good night to Sam and off she goes to nestle in for a long winter's nap. Poppy tosses and turns and becomes upset because she has insomnia. Whatever shall she do? She needs to sleep!
She wakes up Sam and together they set out on a mission to ask advice on how to make Poppy finally succumb. They visit the bees who are snuggling down nice and comfy in their honeycomb, a frog who sips on a mug of fly milk before he nods off, and a colony of ants who suggest Poppy read a good book which may help her reach her Dreamland goal.
Finally their journey takes them to a family of non-hibernating mice who welcome them inside their home and invite them to stay with them for the winter. Will Poppy and Sam be able to stay awake until Spring arrives just like the mice?
This is the third book in the Poppy and Sam series. This picture book/graphic novel will be a great hit with kids. The characters are adorable and the speech bubbles make them come alive. The story is educational and offers themes of friendship, caring for each other, bedtime prep, the seasons, and it gives the reader a glimpse into a variety of animals living in their habitats. This book is a perfect introduction to graphic novel enjoyment. I highly recommend this book.

Meet the Author
Montréal-based artist Cathon makes children’s books and comics. After self-publishing a couple of critically acclaimed zines, she published her first professional book, La liste des choses qui existent, in 2013 — an absurd encyclopedia co-created with established cartoonist Iris.
Her first solo book, Les ennuis de Lapinette, was published in April 2015 by Comme des géants. Vampire Cousins sees her exploring moodier territories, while still retaining her uninhibited drawing style.
About the Illustrator
Susan Ouriou is an award-winning literary translator who has translated the fiction of Quebec, Latin-American, French and Spanish authors.
She won Canada's Governor General's Literary Award for Translation in 2009 for Pieces of Me by Charlotte Gingras, after first being shortlisted for The Road to Chlifa by Michèle Marineau and then for Necessary Betrayals by Guillaume Vigneault. The Road to Chlifa was also awarded an honour list placing by IBBY (International Board of Books for Youth) as were Naomi and Mrs. Lumbago by Gilles Tibo, This Side of the Sky by Marie-Francine Hébert and Pieces of Me. Necessary Betrayals was also voted one of the 100 best books of 2002 by the Globe and Mail. Another translation, The Thirteenth Summer by José Luis Olaizola, was runner-up for the John Glassco Translation Prize.
She has worked as the director of the Banff International Literary Translation Centre and as faculty for the Banff Centre's Aboriginal Emerging Writers residency. She is the editor of the 2010 anthology Beyond Words - Translating the World.
