The Book

This French to English translation is certainly an adventure.  It spins the tale of the traditional skill of ice fishing to a new generation that may not even have heard it exists.

Alphonse is the proud owner of a spectacular ice-fishing shack but has a problem.  He cannot for the life of him catch anything worth while... not even a pair of discarded underpants!  Alphonse aspires to be the winner of the Best Fisherman Contest that is soon to take place.  But the odds that he will catch the award-winning fish is looking very bleak.

One day he waits and waits and waits to catch the winning fish but in his waiting he falls asleep and he, still inside his beautiful shack, drifts off on an ice floe right out to sea.  Oh my!

He stays asleep until Spring and when he opens his eyes he realizes how much the scenery has changed.   Alphonse finds people in distress on the ocean and he feels privileged to help them out and he becomes a philanthropist.

This is a tall fishing tale that has a great message of sharing, caring and reaching out to others in need.  It is a fun inspiring story that is a delight to share.  I highly recommend this book.

Meet the Author

When she was a little girl, Katia Canciani read constantly. After reading all of these adventure novels, she decided it was time to live an adventure of her own and she became a pilot. Year after year she travelled and flew, and her head became like a very busy airport hall, ideas taking off one after the other. Since her sky was getting a bit too full, she decided to land all of her planes? on paper! Katia then published 36 books for children. She spends her time flying planes and meeting kids in schools.

About the Illustrator

Christian Quesnel produced several comic books for the Editions du Vermillon in Ottawa. Since 2003, he works in tandem with author and storyteller Danièle Vallée, with whom he created the illustrated novel Le D2ux (Éditions David, Ottawa) and graphic novels Manche de pelle and Langue de poche (Studio Premières Lignes, Gatineau). He's illustrated several books and albums with Bouton d'or Acadie, and La cabane is his fifth big fish!
