The Book
Late into the night a father nudges his sleeping son awake. Dad pulls on his son's jacket, woolly hat, and mittens. "We're off to find an Aurora," he said.
The two quietly sneak out on sleeping mom and new baby sister and into the cold freezing night. The stars and moon are suspended high in the sky as father and son ascend to the top of Bracken's Hill. They take a front row seat on the stoney ground and turn their attention upward. The aurora borealis concert begins! Large, colourful dancing lights glow, glimmer and swirl across the pitch black sky. It is such a magical sight that no words are spoken just silent amazement at the spectacular light show that is before them. On the way back home dad is so energized by witnessing this Aurora phenomenon that he cannot stop talking.
This story will delight all ages. The illustrations are colourful and draw you right into the adventure. They are printed on FSC- certified paper with vegetable-based inks.
This book brought back childhood memories for me. When I was little my mom would come into the bedroom and awaken her three little girls and tell us she had something very special to share. She would wrap us in warm quilts and sit us on the backyard clothesline stand. We all huddled together to watch "God's fireworks" perform their magic right before our eyes. Mom always brought a thermos of hot chocolate with her to warm us as we sat mesmerized by this incredible concert. Not only would the colours swish and sway but the aurora made crackling sounds as it danced across the sky.
There is a brief description of an Aurora at the end of the book for those who wish to dig deeper into this fascinating natural event. I love the book and highly recommend it.

Elizabeth Pulford was born in Canada, and moved to New Zealand at the age of two. She is a celebrated author and three-time finalist for the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children & Young Adults.
About the Illustrator
Anne Bannock is a New Zealand–based artist whose work has been sold throughout the world. She works in a range of styles and mediums, from still life to landscapes.
