The Book

Little Bailey the Bat is hung upside down and told not to leave the hollow tree by his mother because she knows that he has trouble sleeping during the day as bats are nocturnal creatures.  Bailey hangs there wide-eyed unable to drift off to sleep.

"On this particular morning, Bailey heard a very loud and very sad sound coming from somewhere deep in the forest.  It sounded almost like an upset foghorn."

Whatever could be making that sound?  Curiosity overcomes him and he takes flight out of the roost to find the source.  Bailey discovers a distressed young bull moose whose antlers are tangled up in ropes that are tied to an old fence.  On one side of the fence hunters are present and on the other a pack of hungry wolves are hunting for their morning meal. Oh my!  Can a small bat rescue the poor moose and set him free from imminent dangers?

This debut book is full of adventure and suspense... two things that kid's love in a story.  The illustrations visually capture the tale and are full of emotion and action.  This book is a perfect stepping stone towards kids moving into early chapter books and an excellent pick for emergent readers.  I highly recommend "Bailey the Bat and the Tangled Moose."

About the Illustrator

NoΓ©mie Gionet Landry grew up in a small coastal town in New Brunswick, Canada, surrounded by the ocean. Growing up, she wanted to become either a doctor or a children’s book illustrator. She lives in Moncton, New Brunswick, with her wife and son.
