Editorial Review

Silver medal winner of the 2020 Key Colors Illustrators Competition!

“(…)The artwork features expressive faces, highly simplified forms, textured effects, and a limited palette of rich colors. Whether presenting Soomi’s predicament or her emotional responses, the story is written with a good understanding of a child’s point of view. A promising picture-book debut for Oh, a Korean American author-illustrator, and a good choice for reading aloud.” - Booklist

Unwrapping Some Illustrations for You

The Book

Susie Oh's heart-warming debut book stars an adorable little girl named Soomi.  A new sweater arrives in a box wrapped in soft, crinkly paper.  When Soomi tries it on it's way too big for her and her Mom says it will fit after Soomi grows taller.

Soomi can't wait to grow bigger so she begs to wear her sweater right now!  Her mom gives into her wishes and adjusts the sweater into one that's now tailor-made for her determined little girl. Soomi is over-the-moon happy.

Her daughter can't wait to get to school and show her friends her beautiful sweater. When she arrives there she rushes to remove her coat and unfortunately snags the sleeve and a hole ensues!  Oh noooooo!

Soomies friends try to help her fix the hole in ways that only kids can...but the hole persists.  Poor Soomi.  Is her sweater ruined forever or can mom perhaps solve the problem?

This sweet simple story is about patience, resilience, problem solving, ingenuity and understanding.  The illustrations are kid-friendly, inclusive and expressive.  I highly recommend this book!

Meet the Author/the Illustrator

Susie Oh spent her early years wrangling goats and chickens in rural South Korea before boarding a plane for a new life in New York. One of her first memories of the city was a pilgrimage to the iconic library on Fifth Avenue: guarded by two marble lions, it was a temple to books. Susie loved books before she knew a word of English; she loved the tactile rustling of pages, the rhythm of the spoken word, and most of all, she loved the art. Susie studied illustration in college while volunteering in the America Reads program. She now teaches English as a New Language. With her passion for art, storytelling, and teaching, Susie hopes to create books that help early readers develop their own communication skills.
