Unwrapping Some Illustrations

You may have heard an Echo... but have you seen an Echo?

Little Echo hides away in a cave, lonely and shy, echoing all the noises around her

Until the day Max comes along in search of Treasure…

The Book

This book is written by debut author-illustrator Al Rodin and is a delightful hardback picture book full of gorgeous illustrations that deserves a place in classrooms and school libraries.

Little Echo sequesters herself in a dark cave and imitates the lonely sounds that is in her dark and depressing world.  She has no voice of her own but only makes utterances that she can mimic from the other beasts around her.  Nobody even knows she is there.

Little Echo longs to find her very own voice. She knows in her heart that it is hidden inside of her somewhere it just needs to come out. Finally she encounters Max, a boy human.  One day he enters her cave  in search of treasure.  Although Max has a map he somehow gets lost but remains determined to press on with his mission.  He uses his trusty shovel and starts digging away.  Little Echo is too scared to tell him that he is digging in Bear's sleeping spot. Then the angry, hungry bear returns and finds Max sound asleep.

From her hiding spot, in the shadows, Little Echo can feel her courage rising and knows that she has to speak up to save Max.  Will she be brave enough to use her own voice and save him from imminent danger?

The artwork is gorgeous.  It invites the reader into the story and enriches the text greatly.  I love the imaginative creative Little Echo character and the storyline is very unique and inspiring.  It's a book about bravery, finding your own voice, self-assurance, acceptance and friendship.  I highly recommend this book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
