The Book

Jolie is a sweet determined little girl who is obsessed with strawberries.  Her dream is to grow her very own and then enjoy the fruits of her labour.  Her parents aren't giving her much support in her endeavour to plant her own strawberries but she never gives up trying to achieve her dream.

Jolie documents her story through fun scrap-book style journal entries which I love.  Finally Jolie convinces the "old people" ( her parents)  and she gets a green light to start planting making her dream become a reality.  She realizes that growing a successful patch of strawberries takes time, effort and a lot of responsibility if she is to get the job done properly and abundantly.  Jolie is definitely up to the task and her faithful bunny Munchy gives her lots of support through the whole process.

Jolie learns what it takes to be a gardener extraordinaire.  She creates a calendar and notebook, learns why ladybugs are friends of the garden, and carries out important garden etiquette so her garden will thrive and produce the big, red, juicy strawberries which she loves.  At the back of the book the author has included tips for growing strawberries, pest management, and safe gardening protocol.

The illustrations are gorgeous and very kid-relatable. They are vibrant, colourful, and visually educational.  They marrying the text perfectly.  The cover is beautiful and invites you into the story. This book would be a wonderful asset in a classroom and elementary school library.  It focuses on healthy foods to eat and the joy of growing that healthy food yourself.  I highly recommend this book.
