The Book

Aria, a sweet little girl, lives in a very tiny town consisting of only nine houses.  She reflects on the diversity of the families that reside in those nine lodgings.

She explains how each family is different and truly unique from each other.  She includes: a family with no children, one with two moms, one dad with children, one where a child lives with grandparents and one where a child has been adopted, just to name a few.  The book explains that there really is no pat definition for one type of family.  Families are units of people brought together by love. They are committed to living and staying together.  A family expresses unconditional love and support to one another.  I love this definition of a family from www.family.lovetoknow.com:

"The word family is one of the most loosely defined terms in the English language; because it means something different to everyone.  While one person may define family as the relatives who share their home, another may consider family to include extended relatives residing near and far.  Still, someone else views their beloved circle of friends or their pets as family.  Families are vastly different, but all function under one single premise:  shared love and commitment."

The illustrations are gorgeous, full of detail and bursting with beautiful colours. I love the warm inviting colour pallet that the illustrator has chosen to work with. This book will generate conversations regarding all the ways that families can be different.  "All the Families in My Town" is a heartwarming book that will spark discussions about a variety of family styles and certainly would be a great asset, in classrooms and elementary school libraries.  I highly recommend this book!
