Praise

“The rhyming text is organized in well-paced couplets that read effortlessly and offer an occasional nod to other nursery rhymes. The type includes words set in a whimsical font in colors that complement Brantley-Newton’s lively, playful illustrations. Mary and her friends have loads of personality, and readers will be charmed by the ingenuity, dedication, and community spirit they display. A light read, this story is a glowing example of the magic that results when a thoughtful initiative receives support. Fun and inspiring.” — Kirkus Reviews

The Book

"Mary Had a Little Plan" is an inspiring book that encourages kids, no  matter how small, that they can make a big difference in the world around them.

One day Mary passes an old abandoned lot in the centre of her neighbourhood with a marked up wall and wild weeds growing everywhere.  She stops and looks around.  Suddenly she knows how  to turn the eye-sore into something beautiful that the whole community will be proud of.  It needs a cleanup and a complete overhaul. But how will she make that happen?

She receives help from her family, friends and locals that's how.    Under Mary's leadership the tight-knit community bands together to make Mary's vision come true.   With hard work and determination everyone catches the spirit of the revival, roll up their sleeves and together they create a wonderful space to enjoy where everyone is welcome.

The story is written in rhyme which kids will love and the illustrations are full of colour, detail and life.  They are spot on and take you right into the story.  I love the diversity of the characters who gather together to creatively transform this space for all of the community to assemble and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The book will spark conversations about environmental themes, leadership, teamwork, imagination and creativity. I love the nod to the nursery rhymes that's a fun component.  It's fantastic that a little girl takes the lead and inspires others to get on board and work with her for the good of every resident living there.  I highly recommend the book.
