"With the theme of friendship, kindness and empathy, readers will enjoy the journey Sophie goes on to become brave. Children who are shy will relate to Sophie while children who are not shy will gain empathy for their peers. I recommend this book for elementary age libraries. This is a book that children will want to read over and over." --Oregon Coast Youth Book Preview Center

Unveiling the Story

Discover a world of lovable creatures in the Once Upon a Garden series.

Sophie is a curious smart little snail who has a lot of BIG questions  to ponder.  She adores learning new things which just leads to more questions.

"Why is the sky blue?"
 "Why are raindrops wet?"
"Where does the sun go at the end of the day?" just to name a few.

She is so excited to start school and finally get those questions answered.

Sophie is expecting an exhilarating and fun time at school but when she arrives at the school gate she has a wobbly feeling appear in her tummy.  Of all the questions that she has stored up to ask her teacher the most daunting one she discovers is... why is she so shy.  Every time she has an interaction with someone or something new she "POPS!"  She freezes and pulls back into her shell for safety.  However can she overcome her shyness?

Sophie finally meets her match, another snail named Stanely, who confesses to her that sometimes he feels shy too.  Together they support and encourage each other to come out of their shells and to interact with the other classmates and their world around them.  They both gain confidence and happiness as they relax, have fun and make new friends.

This book is perfect to share if your little one is shy or over-anxious about going to school for the very first time.  It will be a great tool that will open up dialogue about feelings, coping methods and how to gain self-confidence in social situations. Care, acceptance, praise, patience and love will draw those who are shy out of their shells and a HUGE coming out party is definitely in order when success has been achieved.  I highly recommend this book.
