Unwrapping Some Illustrations for You

The Book

This rhyming board book is perfect for the targeted age group, 0-2 years.  Little ones are introduced to an Asian mom and her beloved baby as they explore the city where they live.  The vocabulary is simple and the paper collage style illustrations celebrate their city adventure. The colours are vibrant, the characters are expressive and are very baby-friendly inviting the readers to join in the fun.

Together mommy and baby visit a park where they blow bubbles and chase pigeons, see big beautiful murals on walls that tell stories and  visit the festival square where the music and activity make their hearts dance too, just to cite a few.

The city folk are a diverse group which I love and the whole vibe of the book is happy and upbeat.  Early learners, PK or K aged kids, can use the book to read and learn sight words.  I highly recommend this book.

Meet the Author

Laurie Elmquist holds an MA in literature and creative writing from the University of Windsor. Her board books are about babies who love to explore the outdoors, whether it be a beach, forest trail or city park. She teaches at Camosun College in Victoria, British Columbia, and is an online instructor of creative writing at the University of Calgary in Alberta.

About the Illustrator

Ashley Barron is a multimedia artist who is best known for her paper collage work. She is the illustrator of several children's books, including Kids Can Press's Birthdays Around the World and My Forest is Green.

Ashley grew up in the Oshawa/Whitby region of southern Ontario with her parents, younger sister and their many pet dogs and rabbits. Ashley's love for books was ignited at an early age thanks to her mother, a preschool teacher, who kept an extensive collection of children's literature in their spare bedroom. Although Ashley was very much an outdoorsy kid, she savored rainy indoor days, which allowed her the freedom to daydream, read and draw pictures to her heart's content.

Ashley's love for art and literature followed her into adulthood. She graduated from the illustration program at Ontario Collage of Art & Design in 2007 and has been working as a freelance illustrator ever since.

Ashley lives in Toronto with her cinematographer partner, Kevin. Together they share a bright, plant-filled studio with their two cats.
