The Book

This is a great rhyming book with a wonderful important life lesson to be learned.  The illustrations are beautiful and draw the reader into the story.  The book teaches the value of sharing with those around you and not being selfish and driving others away so you can be the sole occupant and owner of something.

In this book a crotchety croc loves just basking in the sun on his rock and is mean to the other animals who want to come and enjoy the river too.  A hippo, a tiger, an elephant, and a variety of other animals are confronted by this aggressive bully with the words:

"GET OUT OF MY RIVER!"
yelled the croc on the rock.
"I'll eat you for my tea."

"GET OUT OF MY RIVER!
yelled the croc on the rock.
  "It's only meant for me!"

Oh my!  How brazen and rude and scary that old croc is!

All the animals run away as quickly as they can leaving the croc to swim, nap and laze around in the sun all alone.  The next morning he awakens and there is dead silence...no movement or sounds anywhere. Did this make croc happy now or does he realize how selfish he has been and that he truly does miss the other animals as they splashed and have great fun in the river too?  He discovers being alone is no fun at all and sharing makes everyone happy including himself!

I love the book and kids will delight it in it too.  It definitely is a winner!

Meet the Author

Marion Clark was born in Glasgow in 1963 and is married with two children. Marion was a stay at home mum and from a very young age wrote stories and poetry. Her love of rhythm and rhyme in her poetry added a flow that appealed strongly to her. She was encouraged at primary school by a treasured teacher Miss Armstrong, to write often and always with emotion and is adamant that all children should be taught English with fun, humour and passion. Marion loves to write children's picture books as she finds them entertaining and fun to compose, and hopes that they make her readers laugh and smile. The Croc on the Rock is Marion's first children's picture book which is being illustrated by the talented artist and writer Tanya Fenton. Marion writes other genres of books as well under numerous pseudonyms.

About the Illustrator

I have always wanted to write children’s stories. I had experience in the visual side of things as I’d worked as an animator in both drawn and computer animation.

So I enrolled in the Writing for Children course at the City Lit in London, which is a fantastic course taught by published authors. The course was a god-send; it enlightened me about all the technical stuff I needed to know.  The advice I would give to anyone wanting to write and illustrate children’s books is not to send your work off too early. Make sure that what you send out really is the best you can do at the time. It’s so tempting to want to send stuff off too soon. Also, always do your research into the industry you want to get involved in - it will save you time and tears!

Tanya Fenton is an author, the illustrator of "Croc on the Rock, "and has done animation for Disney.
