The Abandoned
Paul Gallico
The book is a treasure wrapped in feline fur. It is a story of trust, unconditional love and commitment to being together forever. I have read thousands of children’s books in my lifetime and this is “paws down” one of the best books that I have ever read.
Peter, living in busy London, feels dejected and deserted by his parents who are never there for him. He desperately wants a cat to love and keep him company because of his loneliness. His Scotch Nanny will not hear of him having one since she hates all cats and it is left on her shoulders to mind Peter most of the time. Then one day a strange phenomenon occurs. Due to an unsuccessful rescue of a tabby, who is in the direct path of a moving truck, Peter jumps in and takes the brunt of the vehicle himself, leaving the tabby safe and unscathed. When he revives, to his astonishment, he has transformed into a beautiful, white-coated tomcat. Nanny discovers this disgusting beast in Peter’s bed and grabs him by the scruff of the neck and tosses him outside onto the street.
Peter feeling even more distressed, unfortunately, finds out that the outside world that he has been cast into can be just as cruel as the inside world from which he came. Jennie, a street-smart cat, befriends Peter and mentors him in cat etiquette and cat survival 101. She mothers and nurtures him and finally, comes to dearly love him. Together they journey through many difficult adventures, battling many storms and hardships, and they learn to lean on each other for their very survival.
This book is written in such vivid detail and the language flows eloquently encouraging the reader to turn another page and ingest more of the same. Yes, I was smitten by the style, the storyline and the tenderness of the tale. I can sum up this book in one word: “precious.”
Book review rating: 10 (Best book ever!)
Read on and read always! Have a great day everyone.
