I never want to go to bed.
I like to stay up late.
I'm bouncing off the bedroom walls
and, frankly, feeling great!
I'm dancing like a maniac
instead of counting sheep.
My mom says, "Time for bed."
My dad yells, "Get your butt to sleep!"
I'm not sure what my bottom
has to do with anything,
but that's okay because I'd rather
jump around and sing.
I don't know what it was
that made me feel so wide awake.
Could it have been the Red Bull
and the double-chocolate cake?
I wonder if the seven cups
of coffee plus dessert
of Hershey bars and Skittles
are what left me this alert?
Whatever it turns out to be
that made me feel this right,
I hope I track it down
so I can stay every... ZZZzzzzz

Unwrapping ...
Author: Caroline Adderson
Illustrator: Ben Clanton
Ages: 5-8
Jasper just finished soccer practice and is in dire need of a thirst-quenching drink. His dad gives him some money and he's off to the vending machine to choose a frosty one and cool down. He accidentally pushes the wrong button and a fizzy, syrupy drink rolls out, and to Jasper's horror (and delight) he recognizes that is a Bad drink, not the familiar apple juice that he had expected to appear.
He makes a split-second decision to rip open the tab and guzzle some quick because he knows in his heart he should not be partaking of this evil in a can. And yep, he is right....evil it proves to be. This energy drink is like drinking ten cups of coffee ... so boy, oh boy, Jasper is ready to go... go ... go.
He takes the drink home and hides it in the back of the fridge so it will not be discovered. He is tempted to sneak a drink often and when he does it's like he grows horns and a tail and it makes him do bad things. Bursting with too much energy he cannot even calm down to sleep. He crashes the next morning but finds himself back at the fridge for more.
In soccer he changes the rules, in school he gets his best friend Ori into trouble and discovers by a very embarrassing incident that his underwear with the days of the week printed on them is for girls. Poor Jasper, this drink is ruining his life. The once quiet and sedate guy is turning into an energy-drinking terrorist! Will he give it up? Can he give it up? This fun and very kid-friendly book, in both story and visual form, will have your kids laughing and turning the pages to find out more. The book is highly entertaining, a perfect read for kid's new to chapter books and ohhhh so fun to read aloud. Both reader and "readee" (I just made that word up!) will find this book delightful. Highly recommended. I loved it from the first page.
