About the book

I love this book with its heartfelt message of caring, love and celebrating life together.  Lou is a little boy who spends every Saturday with Granddad and Pops.  They share breakfast and then "they walk to the library hand in hand, like a chain of paper dolls." In the afternoon they spend quality time casually hanging out and enjoying the things they each love to do together.

One day on the way to the library Pops has a fall. Sirens ring out, an ambulance appears and Pops is whisked away.  That evening news arrive that he will need a wheelchair.... not just for now.... but forever.  Oh my!

This turn of events in Pops life makes him sad and depressed causing him to withdraw from the world around him.  He barricades himself in his room and refuses to engage in life.  Lou can't bear to see Pops so despondent so he, Grandad and the neighbours concoct a plan to cheer Pops up and get him up out of his bed and enjoying life once more.  Do you think it will be successful and Pops once again will be his fun-loving self?

This book is about family (no matter how that term is defined), relationships, love, depression, problem solving, disability, and perseverance.  I love the intergenerational factor.  The illustrations are so well done showing emotions and caring on each page.  I highly recommend this book.

Meet the author

Heather Smith spent much of her early life wrestling with words. Not only was she a reluctant reader, she struggled with speech as well. Unable to pronounce certain words she became a walking thesaurus, anxiously swapping out words she wanted to say with words she could say. Although Heather’s relationship with words was rocky, the two were eventually able to get over their difficulties and have been on speaking terms ever since. Today, Heather wrestles with words in a different way – she’s a writer! Instead of dodging them, she grabs them tight with both hands and finds them a home on the page.

Originally from Newfoundland, Heather now lives in Waterloo, Ontario, with her husband and three children. Her east coast roots inspire much of her writing.
