Unwrapping the Story

This book consists of 612 words and has a format where the spine is on top so you flip the pages upwards as you turn them. That's cool.  It is a metaphor for the circle of life that all living things experience.

The narrator of the story is a snowman which some happy, noisy kids create on a beautiful snowy day.  The kids add the finishing touches to their masterpiece: a carrot which enables the snowman to breathe in life, two pieces of coal for eyes that can actually see, two twigs for moveable arms, more coal for a smile, earmuffs, so now he can hear sounds around him, an elegant black top hat and a fashionable scarf that will be the envy of snowmen everywhere.  VoilΓ ... a real, live snowman has been birthed.

"Fortune shines on me. I'm truly complete.  I stand alone. Majestic and groomed."

But one word shouted from a nearby home changes his life completely.... "LUNCH!"

The ravenous kids tear off for some sustenance abandoning the snowman and leaving him alone and vulnerable. The sun in the sky does what the sun is created to do... shine... shine... shine and guess what starts to happen to the Snowman?  Will this be the end of him or is he part of something greater than himself?

The illustrations are simple but full of expression and action that  enrich the narrative.  I personally would have liked a more colourful inviting cover for the book.  Covers are so important.  They lure the reader into the story and peak the reader's curiosity and imagination making him anxious to open up the book and start reading.  This one, in my opinion, fell short of that mission.  The book should be read with an adult as it will ignite conversations about an afterlife and the questions generated should be answered  according to family values held by that particular family.  The theme is one that is open to a variety of personal interpretations.  It will appeal to both secular and religious audiences.

"Frosty the Soulman" experiences, love, death, the wonder of creation, the joy of popularity, the pain of abandonment, a cruel death, transcendence, and enlightenment."
