Tractor - a bookwrap

A book about a tractor?  Yea right! I am not a farmer, I am totally ignorant when it comes to farm machinery of any kind. I thought how can someone write a whole book on one (I thought) boring machine. I will probably dislike the book from the getgo but decided to give it a whirl anyway.

Boy, was I ever wrong.  This is an amazing book and I read it heartily from cover to cover  and loved the whole story from beginning to end.  I highly recommend this book to you written by a Canadian author.  I apologize to him for any pre-conceived, unsubstantiated ideas I may have had prior to the read.  I am so glad I didn't listen to myself and went ahead and read the book because it is wonderful and I would have missed out on a very great tale!

About the book...

The story is set in Oklahoma in 1961.  John, a sixteen year old boy, gets a job with a cantankerous old farmer who asks John to drive a tractor that he purchases across Arkansas and back to Oklahoma.  John, his parents away, decides to take on the job and although a little apprehensive knows there will be many adventures waiting for him along the way.

Why not take the challenge?  He will be starting back to school soon and he desperately wants to earn some money to buy his first  truck that he has been salivating over for some time now.  Taking on this job will allow him to do just that. It sounds like a perfect deal to him.  He will be back in Oklahoma before his parents arrive back home so he decides to go ahead and accept the job offer.

Onbeknownst to John this trip will change his life forever and shape him into the man that he will eventually become by the decisions he makes on that road trip.  He learns that every decision you make has consequences.  He experiences many, many challenges along the way such as breakdowns, breakups, fights, even love.  In every situation he finds himself in he never lets go of his God, his family ties and the deep-rooted love he has for his town and the wondrous land around him.

Coming from a very small town myself in northern Ontario I can certainly relate to many of John's feelings and know exactly what it feels like to be part of a very small close-knit community. It is a place where you are known by every member of the town (by name and by lineage), cared for by them and have their support as you make this important transition into the next chapter of your life and  for those beyond.

It is a great coming of age story that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.  I highly recommend this book.
