This delightful story begins when Elisapee's father surprises her with a sweet gift wrapped in feathers one day. He presents her with a baby seagull chick. There is an immediate bond between the two. Elisapee nurtures her wee bird and gives her the name Nau.
For the first while Nau stays close and lives in a cardboard box inside the house. Elispaee and her brother feed the baby seagull sculpins, seal fat, whale blubber and even small krill. It seems that the little one is always hungry.
Nau outgrows her temperary box home and then lives on top of the family's shed. Elisapee proudly introduces her new pet to her friends in the community, watches her swim in the ponds nearby and even manages to teach her to fly which was no easy task. Each day is a new opportunity for playful adventures together, copious hugs and of course, the touching of hearts.
Nau is growing up fast and Elisapee finally realizes it is time for her to release Nau back into the wild once more and to say farewell to her beloved friend.
This story is based on the author's own childhood experience. The book teaches children the value and rewards of caring for animals. Adopting and nurturing a pet is a very positive, life changing experience for all involved.
The illustrations are truly phenomenal. They are vibrant, big, and so expressive. I fell in love with Elisapee when I first saw her on the cover. They enrich the text and make the story seem almost animated. The book can also be used as a catalyst to spark conversations and understanding of the culture and customs of people living in the far-north Arctic regions. I highly recommend this book.
Charlene Chun never had a seagull, but she once had a pigeon named Christopher that lived, for a while, in a cardboard box. The pigeon flew away, and later Charlene herself flew from Singapore to Canada (with the help of plane, of course). She now lives in Hamilton, Ontario, with her husband and two cats, and illustrates many things, including Akilak's Adventure, Fishing with Grandma, Lean's Mustache party, and Elisapee and Her Baby Seagull!

Introducing the author
Nancy Mike was raised in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, and continues to maintain close ties with the community. This is Nancy's first book and she is passionate about sharing stories of life growing up in Nunavut. Currently, Nancy lives in Iqaluit and works as a nurse at the hospital. She plays accordion and throat sings with the Nunavut band The Jerry Cans and travels across the world to share her stories and music. Nancy is also the mother of two beautiful girls and hopes to inspire them to love their culture and language...and to read as many books as they can! Charlene Chua never had a seagull, but she once had a pigeon named Christopher that lived, for a while, in a cardboard box.
