The Book

"Archeologists and What They Do" is a delightful illustrated book for young children by Liesbet Slegers. Originally published in Dutch in 2019, this English translation from Clavis Publishing is due out 21st July 2020. It has 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format. It is one of the "Profession" series which include books on doctors, astronauts, dentists, race car drivers and more.
This fun informative book unveils what an archaeologist is and the importance of their work. Kids learn that they search for things that people used a long time ago. They document, label and study these artifacts so we can learn how people lived in ancient times. Most of these finds end up in museums for modern day kids and adults to enjoy.
The bright, playful illustrations draw young readers into the narrative and the text explains in simple terms all about archeology and those that are involved in it. A great follow-up to reading the book would be a trip to a museum. The author has included at the end of the book an activity in which kids can collect their own artifacts and bury them so future generations can dig them up and discover life in 2020. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.
