The Best Children’s Books of October 2020

by the Brightly Editors

October’s best new books are all treats and no tricks (though there’s plenty of mischief afoot — we’re looking at you, Underwear Dragon). Poignant and playful, fascinating and festive, these new releases can’t be missed.

Attack of the Underwear Dragon

by Scott Rothman, illustrated by Pete Oswald

As a brand new assistant knight to Sir Percival of King Arthur’s Round Table, Cole has a lot to learn. Particularly when it comes to Sir Percival’s greatest (and only) fear: an Underwear Dragon. This delightful new read is goofy in all the best ways.

I Feel Proud

by DK

Part of the quintessential First Emotions series, the newest board book helps readers identify and celebrate an oh-so-important feeling: pride! In addition to encouraging readers’ confidence, it also teaches them how to make their friends feel proud, too.

What We'll Build

by Oliver Jeffers

A new Oliver Jeffers book is always cause for celebration, and this sweet father-daughter story is the perfect addition to his heartening oeuvre. With tools in hand, a father and daughter first build a door, followed by a house, and then they embark on building immaterial but necessary ingredients for a good life: love and forgiveness, resilience and hope.

The Boy and the Gorilla

by Jackie AzΓΊa Kramer, illustrated by Cindy Derby

A poignant picture book that will open up important conversations about grief, Kramer and Derby’s story-in-dialogue follows a young boy who conjures a gentle gorilla to help him talk through his sadness after losing his mother. As the boy asks big questions, he grows comfortable talking about his feelings, first to the gorilla and then to his father.

I am Anne Frank

by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos

Along with I am Benjamin Franklin, this book is the newest addition to the Ordinary People Change the World series, and introduces young readers to Anne Frank, who will undoubtedly become a familiar face of courage throughout their lives. Age-appropriate narrations of the Holocaust and Anne’s place in it are accompanied by Christopher Eliopoulos’s expressive character portraits.

Cozy

by Jan Brett

The beloved Jan Brett returns with a seasonal read that’s sure to be a household staple this winter. In the wilds of Alaska, Cozy the musk ox finds himself separated from his herd as a snowstorm bears down. Soon, other animals — lemmings, an arctic fox, a snowshoe hare, and more — realize that beneath Cozy’s soft, thick fur is the place to be, and as their numbers grow, so do Cozy’s house rules.

My Rainbow

by DeShanna Neal and Trinity Neal, illustrated by Art Twink

When Trinity wants to match her outsides with her insides, her family goes to the wig store to find the perfect fit. But when nothing feels quite right, Mom makes Trinity a fabulous rainbow wig of her very own. This affirming story is written by the real-life Trinity and her mother, advocates for transgender rights.

I Am the Storm

by Jane Yolen and Heidi E. Y. Stemple, illustrated by Kristen Howdeshell and Kevin Howdeshell

In a time of extreme climate shifts, this beautifully illustrated picture book will help soothe children’s fears about weather emergencies — a tornado, a blizzard, a forest fire, and a hurricane are each featured — by showing families who are informed, prepared, and resilient together.

Happy weekend everyone and Happy Hallowe'en to all its participants!   Stay vigilant and please keep safe.  Join me again here on Monday for more grand picture books to enjoy!

The Book

This delightful book will be a HUGE hit with kids.  It is for fans of "Everyone Poops" and it won't disappoint.

A Daddy rat decides one day to take his baby rats to the zoo and prohibits them to think or talk about poo.  Of course that is almost impossible because before they even depart on their adventure they wonder what sort of poo an astronaut would do... perhaps shiny, silver, futuristic poo? Oh my, they seem to be obsessed with the stinky subject.

On their travels the little rats imagine how a tiny French poodle and her master might poo.  They also ponder the poo from a head chef, a balloon seller, a man with a tattoo, an ice cream scooper and a variety of animals living at the zoo.  Their imaginative speculations are hysterical and very creative.  Finally Daddy has reached the end of his rope with this unending parade of poo talk and he takes his little ones to meet the Pookeeper.  Daddy rat explains to his pups how the poo is used to help make the trees grow and the fruits and flowers too.  Daddy hopes this is the end of their poo fixation but there is one more smelly surprise to contend with at the very end of the book that kids will love.

Kids will laugh at loud as Daddy rat ends the tale with two words.... "OH POO!"  Whatever could have happened to make him utter those words!

The illustrations are extremely well done and they go perfectly with the text.  Kids love anything to do with gross body functions and they will ask for the book to be read again and again.  I highly recommend it.

The Book

Winter is fast approaching and best friends Poppy and Sam are carefully gathering food for hibernation time.   Poppy says good night to Sam and off she goes to nestle in for a long winter's nap.  Poppy tosses and turns and becomes upset because she has insomnia.  Whatever shall she do?  She needs to sleep!

She wakes up Sam and together they set out on a mission to ask advice on how to make Poppy finally succumb.  They visit the bees who are snuggling down nice and comfy in their honeycomb,  a frog who sips on a mug of fly milk before he nods off, and a colony of ants who suggest Poppy read a good book which may help her reach her Dreamland goal.

Finally their journey takes them to a family of non-hibernating mice who welcome them inside their home and invite them to stay with them for the winter.  Will Poppy and Sam be able to stay awake until Spring arrives just like the mice?

This is the third book in the Poppy and Sam series.  This picture book/graphic novel will be a great hit with kids.  The characters are adorable and the speech bubbles make them come alive.  The story is educational and offers themes of friendship, caring for each other,  bedtime prep,  the seasons, and it gives the reader a glimpse into a  variety of animals living in their habitats.  This book is a perfect introduction to graphic novel enjoyment.  I highly recommend this book.

Susanna Leonard Hill is the New York Times bestselling author of Moon's First Friends, as well as many other award-winning books for children. She does frequent school and library visits, teaches picture book writing, and offers picture book critiques. She lives in New York's Mid-Hudson Valley with her children and two rescue dogs.

About the Illustrator

John Joseph’s passion for art appeared at an early age, while living in Orlando, Florida. As a young boy, he was inspired by the many trips to visit the animation studios just down the road at the happiest place on Earth. It was very rare that you would spot him without a pencil and sketchbook, creating stories and drawing away. John Joseph’s love of art continued through school and he went on to get an art education degree from Colorado State University and a masters degree from Lesley University. You could say that John has never really left school, as he graduated and went straight back to elementary school to teach visual arts. There, he is constantly inspired by the imagination of his students, and often includes them in his stories and illustrations. But the best part is, he has several months off throughout the year, to play with his family in the Colorado mountains and create lots of art!
