The Book

Candace's wish is finally coming true. Her mother is allowing her to adopt her very own dog.  They collect and buy all the necessities that will be needed for the new family member then it's off to the pet shelter to choose.  Candace encounters a sweet, energetic puppy that she adores and brings him home.   She names him Freckles and she settles in to become his new caretaker/mommy.

Candace learns quickly that this is going to be a very hard job, one she must stay committed to because the bouncy little guy would rather play, explore and get into mischief rather than listen to her commands and obey the house rules.  He howls at night because he doesn't like to sleep in his special crate, he makes big soapy messes when she tries to bath him, and he even chews up her training book, just to name a few.

She finds her patience oftentimes runs thin and she wants to give up   but she doesn't. She remains determined and consults the puppy training manual to help her raise her little ball of energy.

One rainy morning Candace takes Freckles out for a walk.  In his enthusiasm he dashes off from her dragging his leash behind him. Oh my! Frantically she searches everywhere to find him but he is nowhere to be found.  Will she succeed and bring him safely back home where the sweet little guy belongs?

This wonderful book teaches kids: how to be faithful to their commitments, to never give up when faced with tough situations, and to have patience - which takes a lot of practice and hard work.  The illustrations are extremely well done.  I love the colour pallet and the emotions that are portrayed. Kids can keep a look out for Freddie, Candace's pet hamster, throughout the pages which is a fun element to check out.  The message of the book is positive ( adopt a pet from a shelter ) and inspiring ( you can parent a puppy too).  If you enjoy Candace's Playful Puppy you may also like Candace Center Stage and Grow, Candace, Grow.  I highly recommend this book.
