The Book

Benny is such an adorable little dog and his love for Sam his owner is amazing.  Sam is bustling around in the morning getting ready to go to school and guess who wants to go too?  Benny wants to go with her as he can't stand being separated from her for even one moment.

Looking into his sad puppy eyes nearly breaks Sam's heart so she decides he can come along.  Will her teacher allow Benny to stay or will he be banned from the classroom and have to return home?

This is a delightful story that many kids ( and adults )  with a pet can relate to.  Although dogs are not allowed at school Sam's wise teacher creates the perfect solution so everyone is happy, especially Benny!

The illustrations are detailed, enriching and just plain fun.  Kids will learn that there are rules to follow but sometimes rules can be tweaked or re-designed to make things legally work out.  I love the story and I highly recommend it.

Meet the Authors

Judith Koppens (Deurne, NL, 1969) was – and is – a bit of a dreamer. In her young years, she spends her hours drawing and making up stories. She continued this when she started working as a teacher at a primary school after she finished her pedagogic study. Her students inspired Judith with their spontaneity and sincerity to write all sorts of stories. In 2004 she used one of them for a picture book. Since then she has written more than 40 books for children aged 3 to 6 years and for adults who have an affinity with education and picture books, next to her job as a teacher.

About the Illustrator

Marja Meijer (Musselkanaal, Groningen, the Netherlands, 1966) has been drawing since she was born. It was not really surprising that she went to the Art Academy in Kampen to study an illustrative design. After graduation, she started working as a freelance illustrator in Arnhem and worked in the beginning mostly for regional newspapers and magazines. In 1992 her first picture book was published, De gouden gans (The golden goose). Since then she is an acclaimed and wanted children’s picture book authority in the Netherlands and abroad. Marja lives with husband and children in Velp.

What are the materials you like best to work with?

“I use different techniques depending on the commission and my state of mind. I like to work with pencils, acrylics, aquarelle, ink, and sometimes digital tools. For the illustrations in the CLAVIS-books about Grandpa, I use a collage technique. For the Miss Fiep series, I use color pencils in combination with Photoshop. For educational commissions, I prefer digital tools.’
