Unwrapping the Story

You gotta love Lulu with all her idiosyncratic mannerisms.  This heartwarming story will make you smile as Lulu and her free - spirited ways are tried to be tamed by enrolling her in the Police Dog Academy which is an obedience school for dogs.

She definitely distances herself from the pack attending and not in a good way.  While they sniff out clues, count, speak on command, and follow the instructor's orders, Lulu unleashes herself to run, play, and yes... unintentionally get into mischief.  She just can't help herself.  Life's a blast!   It's in her very nature to be curious, fun-loving and free to follow her own impulsive instincts. She tries very hard to be like the other dogs but to no avail.  Her handler's term for her behaviour is, "she's just very Lulu!

Both Lulu and her owner learn a very valuable lesson about exactly where Lulu fits into life.  She belongs, not restrained by rules and regulations, but in a loving family who accepts her for who she is.  Unconditional love reigns down on Lulu as she has the exact type of family that she needs.  Lucky Lulu.

I love the illustrations.  They are vibrant, colourful, animated and full of heart.  I am sure kids will delight in this story and will learn that it is just fine to be uniquely yourself, in fact it's perfect.

Meet the author

Stephanie Campisi is an Australian-born, Washington-based author who writes humorous things involving strange characters and stranger plots. She is small and quiet enough that people readily share with her their tall tales and darkest secrets, which she then makes taller, darker, and occasionally more handsome. She suspects she might have made an excellent spy. She has slept in a cemetery, has a friend who was bullied by a prince, and lives in a haunted house in a haunted town. Two of the three statements in the previous sentence are true. Or maybe they all are.  When not writing picture books, she works as a copywriter in Washington. Very Lulu is her fourth book. You can visit her at stephaniecampisi.com

About the illustrator

I am a 25-year-old aspiring creature designer based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. My passion for drawing animals started when I was a very small child, and through my teenage years I gained an avid interest in animal anatomy and learning about the muscles and bones that would go into my imaginary dragon creatures. Since then I have made a concerted effort to impove my art in all areas, however it is my underlying interest in creature anatomy which has put me onto the path of creature design.

I work mainly in the digital medium, but have dabbled in acrylic and oil painting. My favourite traditional tool is the mechanical pencil, which I use to do detailed studies of various animals and their anatomy. This allows me to hone my hand-eye coordination better than if I restrict all my drawing to the digital screen of my graphics tablet!
