The Book

Emma, an adorable little girl, is jittery because today is her first day of school...ever!  Her mother encourages her not to worry and tells her everything will be alright and advises her to just be herself.  But does that appease Emma?  No, she is still nervous.

She asks if she can wear her favourite flamingo costume because she is sure that will make her feel courageous.  Her mother agrees and off they go into a brand new adventure.

Rather than making fun of Emma when they see her in her costume the other kids immediately go to the classroom dress-up box and don fun costumes too.  Soon the whole place is filled with fun wild animals having a first-day-at-school celebratio.

The illustrations are amazing and very detailed.  The author/illustrator has also added an interactive component into the story.  He has embedded a sweet little bird on each page that little ones can seek and find. The life lesson and take-away of the story is to just be yourself.  I really like the diversity of the students in the classroom also. This is the perfect book to share before a child starts school. "Emma's First Day of School"was originally published in Dutch and is aimed at 3-5 year olds.  I highly recommend it.

Meet the Author/Illustrator

Federico Van Lunter is a Belgian illustrator. There’s beauty everywhere. Art, friends, and family: he always tries to surround himself with things that make him smile and people that make him love. And this constant lust for joy and happiness also shines through in his illustrations. Whether it’s in bright colors or in dark details, in still lines, or in lively typography: he hopes his work encourages people to open up. To experiences, to others, to themselves. Because there’s beauty everywhere.
