Unique Workbooks to Capture Every Kid’s Attention

by Dena McMurdie

Dena read Jack London's White Fang in the third grade and has loved children's books ever since. She reads, blogs, and paints in North Carolina where she lives with her husband and three children. You can also find her at her blog, Batch of Books, where she writes about children's, middle grade, and young adult books.

📚📚📚📚📚

My children’s interests range far and wide and can change at a moment’s notice. They’ll become obsessed with a topic and dive deep into it for several weeks before moving on to something else. They might want to expand on a topic they covered in school or take on a passion project like hand lettering. I’m always on board with learning new things and helping them explore their interests, so I keep my eye out for unique workbooks that they’ll enjoy.

Whether your kid is fascinated by rocks and minerals or you want a fun workbook to supplement what they learn at school, here are 14 titles to explore.

Dr. Seuss Workbook: Grade 1

by Dr. Seuss

If your child likes Dr. Seuss’s wild and wacky world, they’ll love this workbook! With familiar characters, fun exercises, reward stickers, and lessons in educational and emotional subjects, this workbook is perfect for first graders. This book series also includes workbooks for 2nd and 3rd grade.

You can’t go wrong with this interactive workbook about dinosaurs. Kids will learn facts about their favorite dinos while completing quizzes, activities, puzzles, and doodles. It’s a must-have for every young dinosaur enthusiast!

Eyewitness Workbooks: Ancient Egypt

by DK

Another subject my kids can’t get enough of is Ancient Egypt, and this workbook feeds their curiosity. From mummies to mythology, this book covers everything that kids want to know about this ancient civilization. Draw hieroglyphs, learn about the pyramids, and find interesting facts about the gods with this unique workbook.

Jumbo Pad of Number Puzzles

by Highlights

The best way to help kids remember their math facts is to have them practice. This jumbo-sized workbook is jam-packed with number puzzles, including mazes, codes, and logic. Your kids will have so much fun with these puzzles that they won’t realize they’re learning math at the same time.

Molly and the Mathematical Mysteries

by Eugenia Cheng, illustrated by Aleksandra Artymowska

This short book isn’t your traditional workbook. Instead, it’s a collection of (very) short adventures that illustrate math concepts to children in an imaginative way. With flaps to lift and big ideas that challenge kids’ thinking about math, this is an excellent book to read together.

The Fact-Packed Activity Book: Human Body

by DK

The human body is fascinating, and kids will learn the ins and outs of how it works with this interactive workbook. It’s an excellent choice for aspiring doctors or kids interested in learning more about their bodies.

Mad Libs Workbook: Summer Activities

by Catherine Nichols and Mad Libs

My kids will eagerly dive into any Mad Libs book I hand them, and this summer workbook is the perfect way to keep their minds sharp. It’s filled with fun games and activities to refresh their phonics, spelling, comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge.

Budding fashionistas will be thrilled to get their hands on this informative and interactive workbook. They’ll learn how to tap into their creativity to design clothing, accessories, and outfits using their surroundings as inspiration. It’s perfect for any child that wants to be a future fashion designer.

The Incredible Math Games Book

by DK

Who says learning math has to be boring? With this exciting book filled with math games, kids will have a blast while reinforcing the concepts they learn in school. With full-color games, flaps to lift, and plenty of math-related fun, it’s the perfect book to occupy kids after school, on road trips, or during a rainy day.

Write-On Wipe-Off STEM

by Highlights Learning

Every aspiring scientist knows that most experiments are just as fun the second or third time. That’s where this exciting STEM workbook comes in. Kids can do the activities and fill out the pages, then wipe them off and do them again. They’ll learn about engineering, physics, design, and critical thinking.

The Coding Workbook

by Sam Taylor

Does your child want to learn how to build a website? With just a pencil, kids can learn the basics of HTML and CSS as they work through the lessons in this book. It’s the perfect way to introduce a young web designer to the way websites work and the code that goes into creating them.

The Fact-Packed Activity Book: Rocks and Minerals

by DK

My kids obsess over rocks and minerals. Their favorite field trip was when their school brought in a gem mining experience, and they got to mine for pretty stones. This workbook is perfect for gem lovers and rock enthusiasts. They’ll need no encouragement to complete this book’s activities, puzzles, and quizzes.

Destroy This Book in the Name of Science! Brainiac Edition

by Mike Barfield

Get ready for some hands-on fun! This unique workbook is perfect for curious kids that love science and art projects. They’ll get to cut, color, glue, build, and experiment to their heart’s content. They’ll spend hours working on exciting projects that teach STEM concepts at the same time.

The Story Pirates: Digging Up Danger

by Story Pirates and Jacqueline West, illustrated by Hatem Aly

This book is one of the most unique workbooks on this list because it’s two books in one. The first half is a mystery novel about the daughter of two scientists who spends her summer hunting ghosts. And the second half is a guide to help children write their own mystery story. Inspired by a real kid’s story, this Story Pirates book is a fantastic tool for young authors.
