What in the world is a Caldecott Medal?

The Caldecott Medal and Honour Book have been going on from 1938 - Present.

In 1937 Rene Paul Chambellan designed the Caldecott Medal.  It was a bronze medal and it had the winner's name and date engraved on the back.  It as awarded annually by the Children's and School Librarians Sections of the American Library Association.

Ralph Caldecott was one of a group of three influential children's illustrators working in England in the 19th century.  His illustrations were unique to their time in both their humour, and in their ability to create a sense of movement, vitality, and action that complimented the stories they accompanied.
