Oh the pain of a stub!!!!

Quote of the Day:  "At night, when the curtains are drawn and the fire flickers, my books attain a collective dignity."
                                                  ~E.M. Forster

Oh the pain of a stubbed toe...whether the big or the small .... it hurts!  Your first instinct is the grab on to that throbbing digit and comfort the poor thing.  Your face instinctively winces up and you find yourself  standing on one foot, cradling the injured one,  with tears running down your face and unrehearsed words coming forth out of your mouth.  We all have been there, done that and it is not fun.  Today's book is all about the trauma of a stubbed toe....

Title:  Because I Stubbed My Toe
Author/Illustrator:  Shawn Byous
Ages:  4-8

Get ready to move!  Get ready for the best illustrations ever!  Get ready for a cumulative tale that will have you laughing and being entertained right up the last page.  With wit and hilarity Shawn Byous uses the butterfly effect to lead you through a sequence of silly and entertaining events that will keep your kids asking to read the book one more time please.  The drama begins with a stubbed toe causing a chair to fall, which scares the dog, who scares the cat, who jumps out the window....well you get it...one thing leads to another and the whole fiasco is brought back home again with an unexpected and yummy ending!

The text is simple and sparse - perfect for early readers and the illustrations can stand on their own quite nicely.  The colours Byous chooses are vibrant and strong and the expressions that he captures on both man and beast are truly wonderful.  The illustrations are cartoonish, comical and the action continuous.  Byous adds symbols to denote crashing and moving which ratchets up the excitement and involvement of the reader.  A truly great book that both girls and boys will fall in love with. (and adults too)
