Happy Birthday Chris P. Bacon - a bookwrap

Do you remember the nursery rhyme, "This little piggy went to market?" Well the little piggy I am going to introduce to you today did go to market... literally.... he markets himself on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter and becomes an overnight sensation.  I want you to meet Chris P. Bacon and his owner Dr. Len Lucerno.  I know you will be inspired by their story...

Unwrapping...

Authored by Len Lucerno and Kristina Tracy

Illustrated by Penny Weber

Ages 2+ and beyond

Unwrapping some illustrations for you...

Isn't that just the cutest face ever?   He's in birthday-cake heaven. The illustrations are bold, colourful, charged with emotion and action, and extremely kid-friendly.  I love all the detail and busyness that captures the momentum of the story and that makes the reader feel he is in the scene not just a by-stander looking at it from afar.

About the book...

Chris P. Bacon is a modern-day hero.  The poor little guy is born physically challenged and is taken to the local veterinarian to be euthanized by his owners.  When the vet looks into his eyes, he smiles and claims the little malformed piggy for his very own.  The vet just senses in his heart that Chris P. Bacon is one-of-a-kind, unique, and very special.

Dr. Len Lucerno and his family lovingly care for the tiny piglet. The doctor then comes up with a brilliant contraption to launch that tiny fellow into the world of mobility.  He takes pieces from his son's K-Nex set, tweaks them, and creates a wheelchair so his newly adoptee can actually move safely around, play happily and experience a much better quality of life.

Within a matter of a few weeks Chris P. Bacon is the darling of social media gaining rock-star status.  All over the world he inspires people with his courage, his ingenuity and his amazing loving heart.  Do you know what else he morphs into?  He becomes a famous author! He can now hoof-it around his world and spin piggy tales too.  Magic!

In this fabulous third book he is celebrating his birthday.  Like every two year old on the planet he is excited because this day will be all about him.  Chris's exuberance spills over to his farm animal  friends who can't wait for his party to begin.  Not only are they invited to his soirรฉe but he welcomes his human friends as well. So, if you are human... and I think you qualify...guess what?  YOU are invited to his birthday bash too!

Chris P. Bacon, everyone's favourite Pig on Wheels, cordially invites you to join him for an "oinking" good time.  He has saved a humungous slice of his birthday cake for you to partake of.  Come on let's go and pig-out, Chris is waiting for you!

The authors for you...

Lucero, who lives on a farm in central Florida, brought the little pig home to his wife, two kids and menagerie of animals.
The animal's official name became 'Chris P. Bacon' but informally, they called him 'Piggy' Lucero's kids loved him and snapped photos.
The family dog, a black and white Australian Shepherd, became his protector.
The doctor wondered how he could help the pig move easier and considered a set of wheels attached to a harness, similar to what some lame dogs use.

Kristina Tracy is having a great time working on children’s books with Wayne and Doreen. When she is not writing or being a mom, she loves gardening, horseback riding, and rearranging the furniture in her house. She may also be found at the counter at Starbucks pondering the infinite possibilities!

What Does God Look Like? - an adult bookwrap

I think most people on the planet have wondered if there truly is a God and if so what does He look like?  Is he white? Black? Female? Both? Who knows for sure?  Some people have had a death experience and have claimed to been transported to heaven and actually encountered Him.  This a book about one man's experience  and how it affected him for the rest of his life.

"What Does God Look Like?"
A Journey to the Other Side

Authored by James L. Dickerson

Unwrapping some photos from the book...

About the book...

This is an inspirational true story of a young boy and his father who go off on a fishing trip and a terrible tragedy occurs.  The horrific disaster transports the two through a velvet tunnel and right into the very presence of God.  They are told by God that there has been an error, only one person is to be standing before him but because the two souls had clung so tightly together on ascent, only one will be allowed to stay in heaven.  God sends James back to earth to tell his story and to do good works for the rest of his life.

The book reveals the author's life journey and how he carries out the requests mandated to him by a sovereign God he actually saw.   The book informs the reader of other near-death experiences by the author and how miraculous interventions continues him to live on, just as God had promised him on that fateful day he stood before Him.

"What Does God Look Like?" will strengthen the faith of believers and challenge the arguments of non-believers." Most importantly it provides an eye-witness account of what readers will experience when their turn comes to cross over to the other side."

About the author...

James L. Dickerson, has written more than thirty books, worked as a staff writer at The Commercial Appeal, the Clarion-Ledger, Jackson Daily News, the Greenwood, MS Commonwealth, and the Delta Democrat-times.  In Addition, he has worked for social service agencies at which he placed hundreds of children on adoption and in foster homes, and at a state mental health department where he worked with individuals with intellectual disabilities.  At the latter job, he created a program called "You've Got a Friend", which provided institutionalized individuals who never received visitors with friends who visited on a weekly basis to serve as mentors.

Unwrapping the CD...

This fun CD will kick start your season and get you in the Christmas spirit for sure.  It opens with three originals songs, "presented with panache, substance, and personality."  The holiday package is stuffed with 22 songs in all, perfect, for the whole family to enjoy.  It also features four bonus tracks from Greg's new children's DVD,  "Butterscotch's Playground."

The CD was arranged and produced by Chicago-based Alec Miller, who harnessed Greg's passion for both old and new renditions of Christmas songs.  "The resulting collection enfolds children and adults alike in the warmth of Yuletide music and the holiday spirit."

Greg has always wanted to pay homage to the old-school style of musical arrangements.  The settings for many of the songs found their roots in orchestral arrangements made famous by Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Dean Martin.

According to Greg...

"Those 'old-school' musical arrangements are really important for a child's development of both musical perspective and understanding, with harmony, rhythm, and tone colour being explored to their fullest. And for people of all ages, they're simply wonderful to listen to."

About Greg Page...

Greg has long been at the top end of children's entertainment and is respectfully regarded as one of the genre's leading performers.  He grew up in Northmead, a suburb of Sydney, Australia.  He was raised with a keen love of music and studied Early Childhood Education at Sydney's Macquarie University.  In 1991 he teamed up with fellow students Anthony Field and Murray Cook to form what would become one of the world's largest children's brands, The Wiggles. In 2006 he retired from the group due to a condition known as orthostatic intolerance, a form of dysautonomia.  Now doing well Greg is moving forward and has established The Greg Page Foundation to raise awareness and funds for research into orthostatic intolerance.

He has been awarded the Order of Australia, (knighthood) for his services in the arts, in particular to children's entertainment, and a variety of charities. He has received an Australian Record Industry Hall of Fame Award, honorary Doctorates for Macquarie University and Australian Catholic University, and an Australian  Record Industry Association Outstanding Achievement Award.  He is a seven-time ARIA (Australian Grammy) winner.

Open Mic Wednesday - welcome

I'm passing the mic to my friend Troy Kent this morning.  So happy he is with us today.  Introducing ...

Troy Kent has been a high school English teacher for over two decades. He is a graduate of Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Troy currently resides in Long Sault, Ontario, with his wife Robyn and their five children. He is the author of the endearing children's book titled The Reading Promise as well as the whimsical children's book titled Stinky Blinky.

First of all, I’d like to thank Marilyn for asking to me to be a guest blogger.  It is certainly a thrill and an honour!
When she invited me to write something, I was told that it didn’t matter what I wrote about. The choice was mine, so I decided to write about something that I’m passionate about, which is reading!  With that in mind, I’d like to call this Just Ten Minutes.
Ten minutes is all it takes to make a connection with your child that might affect him/her for the rest of your lives.  I wrote lives because the experience of reading to your child can be as rewarding to the parent as it is to the child.  I believe that many people don’t take the time to read to their children because they just don’t have the time (or the energy) after a tiresome day at work.  Many parents are of the view that it requires 30, 45, or even 60 minutes.  The truth, however, is that you only need to devote ten minutes to this endeavour, especially in the beginning, and it could end up being the most rewarding minutes of your day/life.
Katherine, the young protagonist in my children’s book The Reading Promise, wants to do something special for her child, but her choices are very limited due to her financial circumstances.  Luckily, Katherine discovers that by reading to her son nightly she can give him something special – something that money cannot buy.  She gives him the gift of reading, but she also gives him the gift of herself.
I wrote that book in attempt to capture and share the special bond that can, and usually does occur, between a parent and child through regular reading. It’s also important to emphasize the need to engage the child while he/she is being read to, and when possible make the connection to real-life events and situations.  It’s also necessary to pick topics that are of interest to your child, not just yourself.  I regularly tell parents that they need to pay attention to their children while they are reading to them in order to determine what interests them, and where their curiosities lie.  Once you are able to determine those things, you are well on your way to creating a lifelong reader and learner!
As mentioned above, make an attempt to read things that captures your child’s interest, and this isn’t as hard as you might think.  Quite often, children will indirectly tell you while you’re reading to them through facial expressions and verbal responses.  For example, my young protagonist learns that her son has an interest in dinosaurs while reading to him one night, so she took him to a museum and he got to see real dinosaur skeletons; he was mesmerized! Imagine what goes though children’s minds when they get to see something almost “come to life” that they just read about.  Books can open eyes that were previously closed.
I called this Just Ten Minutes because that is all it will take to get your reading program off the ground, and by starting off small, new “reading parents” are more likely to stick with it, especially after they start seeing the results.  It’s very similar to exercising.  When you’re just starting off, keep it easy and keep it short in the beginning, and slowly increase over time.
I previously talked about engaging your child and the need to satisfy their curiosity with real-life connections, but it’s also important to meet them at their level with their interests in mind.  As long as the reading material is age and subject appropriate, it does not matter what they are reading.  If they want to read comics, read comic books with them.  If they like sports, read books about sports with them.  Keeping in mind my disclaimer about the age level and subject matter, it does not matter what they read, as long as they read!  Their reading tastes are like most things: they will change over time.
This is especially crucial with young boys, as I know that some of them can be very reluctant readers.  As an English teacher of over twenty years, I know how challenging it can be to motivate a reluctant (male) reader.  I’m not saying that females are always eager readers right from the get-go, but my experience, along with many studies, show that many males are still lagging behind their females counterparts.  It’s not hard for me to pick out the students who were not engaged readers at an early age.  Fluency in reading is especially important in this new, technological (electronic) age that we are entering, as it requires adequate literacy skills more than ever. As parents, we need to provide whatever advantages we can to our children, and as early as possible. Reading to our children is one of the most important and least expensive gifts we can give them.
My second book, Stinky Blinky, illustrates this point very effectively.  It is a humourous book with a simple rhyme scheme that is directly aimed at that young (reluctant) male reader.  I made sure that the illustrations in this book were a gas (pun intended) as I knew it would take amazing illustrations and a humourous storyline to catch the attention of that reader.  The problem, however, is that too many parents want their kids reading what they like, versus what the child likes.  I tell parents of young boys in particular, that are refusing to read, to go out of their comfort zone a little and try a book that they might have otherwise passed over.  Eventually, they will discover “that book” that starts the chain reaction, or one that stimulates the lifelong reader!
So, just ten minutes of insightful, engaged reading (with books that interest your child) is all it takes!
Troy Kent, a graduate of Acadia University, has been a high school English teacher for over twenty years. His first book is titled The Reading Promise, and it was published in 2014. It recently won a 2015 Moonbeam Children’s Book Award, a 2015 National Indie Excellence Award, a 2015 BookChoice4U Book Award (England), and a 2015 Mom's Choice Award (Gold).  He has already published a second book, Stinky Blinky, and his third book is coming out soon.  Troy was recently featured on CBC Radio One during a live interview, and he has been asked to be a guest author/speaker during the 60th anniversary of The Michigan Reading Association’s annual conference in March, 2016.  A father of five, Troy also enjoys coaching high school football.

And let's not forget his other book...

I just want to say a huge thank you to Troy for his guest post today and congratulate him on his book "The Reading Promise."  He has been picking up awards many awards as it is recognized for it's powerful message, one that has made a great impact on the reading world for sure.  I am so proud of his work and the recognition his book is receiving and rightly deserves.  If you haven't read it yet, please do, it's a winner indeed.

Ever heard of fractured-fairy tales?  Well this is a fractured nursery rhyme on steroids.  A delightful book that you cannot just read through once and tuck away on a shelf.  It will quickly become one of your young child's favourite and repeatedly you will spend hours browsing those eye-pleasing illustrations and laughing at the antics that are taking place.   Get ready for ... "One more time please!"

Unwrapping for you...

"Little Bo Peep and Her Bad, Bad Sheep"
A Mother Goose Hullabaloo

Authored by A.L. Wegwerth

Illustrated by Luke Flowers

Ages:  4-8

Unwrapping the illustrations that are just too fabulous for words...

The illustrations are brimming with action, expression and heart. There are word bubbles galore, conversations being tossed back and forth, the narration of the nursery rhyme itself.  The chaotic  busyness just draws you right into the story being told.  The book is a cross between a Where's Waldo book, as you try to locate those naughty little sheep, and books penned by Richard Scarry.

My Review...

Little Bo Peep's rogue sheep have done it again!  They have taken off and she doesn't know where to find them.  She is frantic and worried and starts her search immediately to get them back home safe and sound and under her protective care once again.

Little does she know that they are causing chaos and mayhem in Nursey Rhyme Land bumping into beloved Nursey Rhyme characters and causing trouble to all those that they meet.  They swoop in and steal the three little kittens' mittens and take off with them, they topple poor Humpty Dumpty from his perch, and they completely destroy Mary's pristine garden, just to name a few.  Such behaviour is truly unacceptable but Bo cannot retrieve them as they keep disappearing and running off for more manic adventures on a whim.  The reader knows exactly where those wooly scoundrels are and can track their every move on each page.  Kids will giggle and laugh as they are pulled into the mischievous antics of these "sheep gone wild" scenarios.

The author has brilliantly listed the traditional rhymes at the back of the book that she uses throughout, so that might be a good place to start.  Once your child is somewhat familiar with them they can try to find the rhymes in the story.  This is a very creative, imaginative, entertaining take on a very old and traditional nursery rhyme which I  highly recommend.  And the best part?  It's a "wool" lot of fun.

About the author...

A.L. Wegwerth (also known as Amber Ross) has an uncanny ability to recall songs and rhymes from childhood with little-to-no prodding. As one might imagine, this remarkable skill comes in handy on a daily basis—or at least for the time it took to create this book. She lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, with her husband and kids.

About the illustrator...

Ahoy! I appreciate that you want to explore a bit more about me and my creative journey. I suppose it all began back in '79, in the mountain town of Buena Vista, Colorado. Ever since I can remember I was drawn to drawing. I found an endless sea of inspiration in storybooks, comics, cartoons, toys, every Scholastic How To Draw book I could get my hands on, all those classic 80's movies, and the wild adventures with my brothers. A treasured childhood gift, was my grandfathers drawing desk that I spent countless hours creating upon. It had this wonderful extending arm lamp that truly illuminated my world of imagination! Most kids at that age would trade sports cards with each other. I would trade my drawings of sports heroes for sports cards. It was then I thought, "Maybe someday I could actually make a career of this"!

Thankfully I had a supportive family and incredibly talented art teachers that cheered me on in this pursuit. I attended Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, and graduated in 2000 with a BFA in Illustration. I left with a head full of dreams, a hefty school loan and a wedding ring. Words can't express the gratitude I have for my wife/best friend who has forever blessed every step of this journey. Her love and encouragement has been the greatest source of inspiration in my life.

I moved from Denver to Colorado Springs and went to work for Young Life in the Creative Services Department. I spent 10 richly inspiring years serving the mission of Young Life and growing as a designer/illustrator. During that time my wife and I also grew a little family. I had started freelancing early on in my career so my wife could be home with our kiddos. Little did I know that this decision would impact my work in unimaginable ways. The creative opportunities I had as a freelancer led to achieving my life-long dream of owning my own creative studio.
In 2010 I launched Luke Flowers Creative, and have been sailing the endless sea of inspiration ever since. Luke Flowers Creative was founded on the goal to bring "illumination of imagination" in every area of my work. This idea was inspired by the meaning of my name (Luke, means Light) and I strive to embrace that in every aspect of my life. Whether it is illuminating the imagination through my illustrations, or bringing a shining light of encouragement to other creatives. I deeply hope that my work will be a source of illumination for you.

P.S. I think he's is amazing.  I love, love, love his style and imaginative take on the book.... just saying.

 Read on and read always!

It's a wrap.
