Praise for the book...

"They are funny and heart-warming... The language is simple and the illustrations expressive and dynamic, just right for early readers.
-The Scotsman

"A quirky little tale with appeal to newly minted independent readers with sophisticated senses of humour."
- Kirkus Review

"...this would appeal to older children as well as the language is rather beautiful with lots of puns, palindromes and funny little rhymes.  It would also make a good book read aloud."
-The School Library

"Tolman's miniature colour vignettes are gems, but they have bite, too... readers who enjoy battles of wits will savour Vanden Heede's dark comedy."
-Publishers Weekly

About the book...

Wolf finds a fact-filled book in the library and smirking to himself   thinks he will finally outsmart his clever cousin Dog. You see Dog reads books and is mentally quick and resourceful. Wolf? Not so much.

The battle of the smarts (and wit) is on......

They banter back and forth about robots, knights, dinosaurs, rockets and more.  In so doing they discover fantastic facts about these things they love, but more importantly they learn how to get along and respect each in the process.

Wolf loves to rhyme:  "Look it up in a book?
That's how people learn to cook!"

Wolf also looks to his cousin to deal with Cat (because deep down he is afraid of him),  and Dog hangs with Wolf because, well...
"His cousin needs him! Has his house collapsed? Did a tree fall on the roof?  Is the forest on fire?  Or did Cat come? It's all the same to Dog. He'd go through fire for his cousin!"

The book is divided into four sections:  Mummies and skeletons, Robots, knights and pirates, Dinosaurs and dragons, and Rockets and the moon.  The book included quizzes, text bubbles, and diagrams.  There are full-colour illustrations on every page for your viewing pleasure and the funny vignettes between the Wolf and Dog are interspersed with facts that are scientifically correct. The book also includes multiple choice questions and craft activities... how brilliant this book has it all!

This laugh aloud tale is perfect to read aloud.   It is also very appropriate for someone just beginning to read chapters books, although help may be needed to decode some of the longer words.  Young and old will both enjoy the read and come away smiling from this duo's antics I'm sure.

It is the Winner of the Dutch Flag & Pennant Award 2015
