Number One at the Park - a book review

"A book is a garden, an orchard, a storehouse, a party, a company by the way, a counsellor, a multitude of counsellors."
                                             ~Henry Ward Beecher

Title: Number One at the Park
Author:  Gary McDonald
Ages: 2-4

This amazing, colourful, interactive book is just the thing to introduce your little one to the exciting world of numbers.  This is the first book in a series of ten that will have your child engaged in, and enjoying the fun world of counting.

Number One is personified as a cheery, friendly digit that is the proud owner of a cute little puppy named Pebbles.  Together they enjoy life as Number One bathes him, grooms him, spends quality time with him and takes him for long walks in the park.  One day a furry cat jets by and Pebbles tugs so hard on his leash, it snaps, and he tears off to catch his prey.  Poor Number One is stunned and heartbroken  and sets out looking everywhere for her dear canine friend.  She asks Mr. Frog, Miss Butterfly, and Mr. Bee if they have seen her beloved pet but they all answer no.  She is about to give up and head home when her friend Number 2 shows up with a lovely surprise.  I like the way the next number was introduced to the reader...foreshadowing what  is to come in future books.  The story has a very happy ending making Number One and the reader very contented indeed.

The books are designed to provide lessons about family, life, friendship, love and care of animals, safety and conservation.  I am sure this would be a lovely addition to your child's library.
